C100: C100 MKII Test

I agree that these first videos look pretty good. I have one on order (to replace the FS100 I sold a few months ago) and can't wait to try it out. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be any shipping in Canada yet.
 
I'm a big advocate of the Canon C line. I will most definitely either purchase the C300 M2 or the C500 M2....depending on specs. I have to say though...the auto focus feature is pretty cool in concept...but being limited to the center of the frame is absolutely comedic. I think we you'll look back in a 10 years and wonder why you forgot how to compose to compose an image...then remember...oh yea...autofocus was only in the center...then laugh.

I mostly agree. The continuous autofocus isn't very useful if it always chooses the object in the centre. If the one-push autofocus is good, though, I can see myself using it in some situations--the same way I do when shooting stills, focus and reframe.
 
Even if they would just implement the rule of thirds concerning autofocus and have it be user selectable...that would be huge. Until they do that...I don't personally care about this feature.
 
I really would only plan on using this when flying the camera on a gimbal or other sort and I don't have the ability to control focus.
 
I rarely if ever used AF on any of my video cameras. They rarely work well enough to be used, and is distracting when they loose and reacquire focus in a clip. What I do find useful with the C100 MkII is to map One-Shot AF to button 7 on the handgrip. I can then use it to focus quickly just prior to shooting, and then manually ride the focus as needed from there. Other than than, I can use using the AF on the C100 MkII any more than I have in the past on any of the video cameras I've owned or used. AF is great for stills, but I've never really found a good implementation in a video camera.

BTW, so far I really like the images I am getting from the C100 MkII using WideDR. Less work in post while still gaining a lot of dynamic range, pleasing skin tones, very workable video camera compared to the 5D without needing all the extras to make it run well. Shooting with the C100 and 5D simultaneously edit together real well with little work.
