C100: C100 MKII Test

Yes for sure.

But i was specifically talking about the C100 MkII having a videoish look to it. The previous C100 does looks cinematic, you made a good choice if you bought the C100.

I'm just not impressed by what Canon have done to the C100 MkII - the changes don't seem significant enough to jump ship and with its videoish high detail sharpness I'm happy to still own the original C100, which goes out to ProRes HQ and IS CINEMATIC.

Well, that's good to know as I have the C100 mkii like you, and was interested in more of a cinema look rather than sharpness/detail. I also shoot with the Blade to ProRes HQ...... that's another subject entirely, as there are so many conflicting videos out there on the benefits or not of the Atomos devices, I of course side with "devices with benefits"!

I think we will see some better comparison tests coming out soon once these cameras start shipping out, I wouldn't rely on just one test, I would like to see more professional tests.... hopefully some better subject matter than a freaking graveyard!

Oh, man!

In this cemetery lies soldiers died in the First and Second World War, Russians, Ukrainians, British, Americans, including many celebrities, such as the first prime minister of Czechoslovakia (who built this church in memory of brave warriors), artists, poets, scientists, etc.

There is also public cultural trail for tourists. They are freedom fighters - no freaks, please.

( When I was young, I walked through the cemetery to work, I like it for its unique atmosphere.)

Well, as they say...... content is King. If you like to hang out in cemeteries go for it. I think I fast forwarded through that to the exciting bedroom shots! However, I preferred Shane's subject matter and I watched the whole thing.... call me shallow..... and I'm afraid of ghosts.

Michael - Go to Prague sometime. You'll see plenty of beautiful models and get a little culture to start chipping away at that shallowness ;-)

Pavel - Podle mě krásný historický hřbitov je mnoho víc zajímavé než další modelka! Díky za test. Zatím neprodam svůj C100.

Thanks. I'm also happy with C100 M1 .-).

I prefer Asian models and culture. Not too many cemeteries in Asia, just beautiful temples!

Anyhow, looking forward to more comparison videos...... when do these start shipping out? I thought people would have them by now!

So lame his videos are behind a pay-wall. Like I understand if you are teaching us something like his other helpful videosbut just putting up a test video should be open to everyone. I kinda stopped reading it after I saw his inner circle thing.

Nice images so far, I love the Mark I and dying to get my hands on one. I have been renting the Mark I and might buy the Mark II instead of waiting for my rental house to get one. I need that 1080p 60p for my work.

I think Shane's tests look really nice and sharp as well because he is shooting with a CP.2 - most tests I see are with cheaper DSLR lenses and it doesn't do the camera justice. This was one of the first tests with nicer lenses. I use the Canon Cinema Primes for a ton of work so I would really like to see a test with these primes.

Shane can charge us if he wants, fine, it's his place. But I can also find the same information for free elsewhere. This is really bad publicity and marketing for him if you ask me, but again, it's his right and choice.

I see nothing in all the tests that indicate the mk II is more videoish than the mk I. It's the exact same image aesthetic, just a minor detail and colour richness difference and lower noise. All can be added extremely easily in post if you want a softer, grainy image. I don't buy it that the mk II looks inheretingly videoish, just shoot in Canon Log and grade properly.

Excuse me, I have to temporarily suspend the test, my friend asked me. Thanks for your patience.

I beg your pardon, if I got you correctly and you have the C100 MKII, why not test it yourself for what interests you? Why rely on others' tests?

Possibly some people consider better sharpness and more details as 'videoish', while others don't see it this way. Possibly what matters is what looks to *you* better, in whatever parameters *you* consider to be 'better' or worse'.

My friend (who loaned me a camera) told me that it was not fully finished product, we must wait with the final conclusions. Thanks for your patience, test will go on after final release.

Ohoops! Did I say I had a C100 mkii....... sorry about that I have the mkI.

I do value other peoples opinions when it comes to evaluating and comparing cameras, I don't have the time nor do I consider myself competent to look at all the subtle pros and cons of each camera. There are certain people however I trust more than others when I watch reviews, but ultimately it comes down to me. I spend months looking at different camera, reviews etc. before I buy. Yes, it would be great to try out different cameras but I don't have that luxury where I live. After many months of comparison videos I decided on the C100 for my needs and haven't looked back for a second. it's far more camera than I will ever need.

Concerning sharpness, call me crazy, but there are many things I like about the image of 5D3 over the C100..... the warm image, the shallow depth of field of a full frame are just a couple. Sharpness is nice when you need it, but for what I do I don't need it that much. I used the GH4 as an extreme example of detail and sharpness equalling a videoish image, which since it hit the market I still haven't seen it otherwise. The C100 is sharp but at least to me has a more cinema look to it.

From other videos I've seen there is nothing that compels me to get a C100 mkII.... other than the pure thrill of acquiring yet another new camera, although it would be nice to have two C100's for what I do, but I'm inclined to just pick up a used C100 mkI.

Hi Michael,
I hear you.
It looks to me that there are 2 kinds of 'camps': those who are thrilled by the latest and greatest in terms of video resolution, sharpness and details, vs. those who seek better 'filmic' look.
I also prefer better 'filmic' look over resolution, sharpness and details - as long as there are enough sharpness and details for the distribution media used.

After watching "Marco Polo" on Netflix, I'm pretty sure in about 2years what people will perceive as "filmic" will have changed and watching HD (or even 35mm film) originated material will be similar "aged" than now watching sth shot in Technicolor.
Not saying Marco Polo is of any larger relevance, just that with sensors delivering higher real resolution (as opode to preceded resolution), having higher DR and lower noise floors, images will get cleaner and less "organic".
Funny thing is, when the C300 came out, I dismissed it as being too sharp/clinical, now compared to the new 4K cams, I would also call it "more filmic" in lack of better words ;)

I am now even using a Go Pro 4. I need the shots to tell a story. The audience doesn't care if something looks "filmic" or not.

That silly gangnam style broke all records in youtube. I never heard anyone say that it is filmic. It is important to create content that engages the audience. Nothing else matters.

I can't believe after years of perfecting clean digital sensors that people actually apply grain to make it look like film.
We are in a pioneering stage where any look can be achieved with the technology now available and people want to make it look like a 70s movie.
I hope in 5 years they look back and face-palm themselves.

Absolutely agreed upon, what matters is content, or, content is the king. Period.

Yet, as cinematographers (or wonabee ones), it's both natural and advisable to pay attention to both the technical and aesthetic characters/aspects of the visual.

Best case is when the technical and aesthetic characters/aspects of the visual serve the content, fit the content. For instance, one would expect a different cinematography styles to, say, a romance vs. a thriller.

I was going to say the same thing, then I read your post. I watched a couple of movies yesterday one was "Tombstone" and noticed what a grainy look it had other than that I never watch a movie and think too much about if it's sharp or not, I'm only engaged in the story, it could be shot on anything. I do for lack of a better term product videos I guess you could say..... so I think there is a bit of a difference perhaps with more emphases on a clear image, because the story line is some what limited. In any case the C100 is more women than I can handle.

I think on one hand this resolution thing is interesting, then on the other hand I think it's a self fulfilling prophecy.
