C100: C100 Mark III in NAB 2018?

http://www.canonrumors.com/an-update-on-canons-nab-2018-announcements-cr3/

Place your bets... modification for C300 MKII, C700 or neither?

My bet is that (if this is true) the C300 MKII will get updated processors to give us the frame rates we always wanted.

I can't see them updating the C700 as it's newer and gets respectable frame rates (esp. with the codex box). It could possibly be a full frame sensor for the C700 to compete with the LF/Venice though.

It's definitely hard to see where a new C100 would fit in under the C200. It's probably a market that would have major overlap with a decent mirrorless camera should Canon manage to make one.

My bet is the C100 MKIII will just be a C200 with no CRL/CFast. Would make for great manufacturing and economy of scale and a surprising number of C200 buyers never shoot CRL, just .MP4. Who knows, I could be way off but it would be so easy for Canon to do so. I bet they would sell okay at $5k? it is true about mirrorless overlap, the GH5S at half the cost would far out spec it, but specs are not everything as Canon has proven repeatedly, mirrorless cameras suck for a LOT of real video production. It's obvious that at this point, Canon will not yet build a GH5S level mirrorless camera so maybe they are hedging their bets on a simple, $5k pro video camera at the lower end? Mirrorless have no built-in NDs, horrible form factor for handheld/shoulder mounted shooting, no or compromised XLR inputs(a plastic box hanging off of a hot shoe is not the same as built in, solid XLRs on a video camera), no SDI monitor connections, etc. For many, that stuff doesn't matter but for many event, wedding and institutional users, mirrorless doesn't cut it.

I've never heard of it being phrased as a modification before, with the exception of the release of the DPAF modification you could add to your existing camera back in the day.

Do you all think it will be something like that where you send in your current camera? Or just a micro update only for new cameras, while still bearing the C300 Mark II name?

I'm betting on a modification to the sensor of the C700. I think the C300 II has hit end of life and Canon wants to sell a new camera for $16,000 rather than updating their $10,000 camera.

It would be strange for them to put new innards into an established camera like the C300 MKII. I'd be pleasantly surprised if it were true though as it would breath new life into my camera... It'll otherwise get relegated to being the extra angle on doing multi-cam content. I need frame rates for my sexier commercial work.

It seems plausible that is could be a new sensor for C700, although that would then leave 3 options for sensors (original, global shutter, FF).

Also can you imagine the anti-climax if all they brought to NAB was an update for a camera they sold so few of? I haven't heard of anyone shooting on the C700.

If Canon gave 10bit 4K on a C100 mkIII, then they would do something else silly like put the original viewfinder back on the camera.
They are never a company to give you everything you want at a price most can afford. So my bet is on 8bit 4K.

Timeline matches up on the codec update for the C200 that was promised, but for it to qualify as a special NAB announcement I would hope that means that they're delivering more than they originally promised? Not sure how the sales are doing vs. the EVA, but if they over deliver something here, it could be what tips the scales for many people.

It would be fantastic if it was an update for the C500 since I can't find anyone who wants to buy mine for the life of me!

I'm going to second this....

Oooh while we're playing this game, how about a 4:3 sensor for the C700 to go with the rumoured anamorphics they've been working on...

You said, "Canon" and "over deliver" in the same paragraph. It's Canon Chris! That's not what they do.

But who buys or cares about the C700? As much of a Canon fan that I am, even I have to admit that the C700 is a fail. When I have budget, Arri or RED all of the way, I have not even considered the C700. I don't think it's a bad camera at all, I've shot some tests with it, but it's in a weird price/feature/quality/size area that just doesn't compete.

I think I and the rest of the production world totally agree with you there. It doesn't mean Canon won't do it anyway!

Puredrifting, how much would the canon C700 have to cost for you to show some interest?

I thought everyone wanted a shoulder mount ENG-style c300, so is it just about price? It is canon, so at some point it will cost half of what it released for :)

I'd say for me, it's not necessarily price/cost(although that is always a concern at a certain point), it's client demand. Basically the same reason I didn't buy a C300mkII, V35 or LT. My world it's F55, C300(less and less) and P2 VariCam for broadcast/network ENG(although I will still do feature work with it when it's the best tool for the job).

Please please please be a C100 Mark III. I need to update to 4K. But I don't want the extra one pound of weight and little extra bulk of the C200. And I don't want to pay $7500. $5k would be great!

Anyone else feel the same?
