C100 Mark II Thoughts?

Happy to help  Sometimes the threads get a little thick. Just a sign that everyone on here is passionate about what the do....which is a great thing.

You are my new best friend!

Passion......yes it can. I like all sorts of products. Use what you want to that gets the results that you (Or your client) want to get and anything anyone else has to say is pretty much irrelevant :)

Its seems weird to me that canon havent introduced the eos m mount into their cinema line. EOS m wasn't anounced when the c300 came out but now its here is would be usefull. The cinema line is never going to go full frame so that isn't an issue. Theres an an adapter for full compatibility with EF lenses. Plus its alows adapters for use with other lenses which would be ideal from a user perspective. Which is when I realise Ive pretty much answered my own question. Ideal from a users perspective is not ideal from a canon perspective. The more dificult it is for people to use any other lenses than canon the better, even if it means stopping people using eos-m canon lenses.
I guess this is also yet another indicator of how seriously they take eos m. Which is sad. Just imagine the compact beast they could create if they wanted to.

Canon's primary competitor is Nikon, so I don't see Canon doing anything sub 5k for 4k till Nikon gets in gear. By that time companies like Black magic would have taken a nice chunk share of the video market. For example for $500 more you can get the URSA.

I can imagine that we will see a 4k Canon Cinema camera for a price targeted at the Scarlet MX market. It most likely will not be able to shoot raw but it will be fantastic in low light and have great color rendition and much better file sizes (prores 4444 hopefully)which could be better in many cases. I'm thinking around $13-$15k

the C300 Mark I will drop to $8-$10k. Just a guess.

If the C300 mk2 had 4K and was just around the corner, I think the C100 mk2 would record 422 50Mbps. Leaving that out means they have to protect the higher segment, so I wouldn't expect 4K on the C300m2, not soon. Unless they're planning to add 422 to the C100m2 with an unannounced firmware update, which they very well could.

Yea...all pretty much speculation at this point. One thing is for sure...I think most people would have a hard time spending more than 10k on 1080p camera.

It’s not just the manufacturers saying this, either. For instance, AV industry legend Joe Kane, of Joe Kane Productions, stated during a presentation at the recent IFA technology show in Berlin that ‘a year or two from now you won’t be able to buy a 1080p TV.’
Where sales are concerned, 4K TVs have already achieved a 6% global sales penetration despite currently costing considerably more than 1080p TVs. And with 4K prices plummeting daily and 4K panels rapidly supplanting 1080p ones on shop shelves, this 4K penetration figure is going to explode in the next 12-24 months.

C100 Mark II thoughts ?

The forbes guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The xbox 360 and playstation 3 only output 720p for over 99% of their games. Most people where blissfully unaware of this fact and played their games with their tv upscalling the picture. So the fact that the PS4 can run games at 1080 (which is what most console buyers have) at 60 frames per second is a massive improvment.

Its true that 4k moitors and tvs will become more common, but as far as gaming at native 4k resolution, not even PCs have reached that yet. For your best chance you would need to run 2 top of the line graphics cards in SLI or crossfire and you still wouldn't acheive 60p frame rates. Each of those cards individually would cost significantly more than a games console, so the idea of having native high fps 4k gaming output on a console any time before 2020 is utterly ridiculous.

I think the c100 mk2 can do 4k with firmware that canon can release around the same time as the rest of the lineup does go 4k. If they want to at that time. They will keep the difference between c300 and c100 to be more important enough though, but I doubt 4k will be such a feature. More likely bitrate, framerate and output connections will set them apart. Also form factor might be alittle different with the c300 mk2 getting top of the line lcd and vf.

Problem at least from what I've heard is the heat sink is different between the C100 and the C300. The C100 will heat up too much in 4K.

In terms of internal features, Mark II should be simply implanted as a new firmware in C100 mark I.

Can a firmware update make the mk I able to perform an entirely different sophisticated method of downscaling the image? or can it handle the 60p at 1080p? no that's a hardware change. a new image processor.
Can a firmware update add internal Wifi? more AF pixels besides just the middle? a new high-end tiltable EVF? A new articulating higher quality screen? a new microphone on the body? More assignable buttons?

I doubt a firmware update could do that.

Yes thats true for the mk1 but I think the mk2 is processing three 8mp channels all they way now, so the output to 4k should be only more demanding in compression but less in downscaling?

Yes - I think from that it's true that the MKII does have the hardware to give 4k from the front end - but the question is whether it has a coder chip that's capable of encoding 4k? If the coder is solely capable of HD/AVC-HD, a firmware upgrade won't work.

Why haven't the Magic Lantern team ever tried cracking into the EOS-C series cameras?

I'm guessing they fear legal retribution from Canon. ML has sold a lot of Canon DSLRs for them where cracking the Cinema line would be undercutting Canons more expensive cameras and taking money out of their pocket.

Just a guess.

There's a lot more DSLRs out there than there are C100s, and there probably isn't much functionality that you can add to a C100 that it doesn't already have (it probably can't output raw/doesn't need to add audio meters/peaking). So it's not really that interesting for them to work on, and they probably don't have much to add to it, never mind how difficult that process might be.

My take - the first on this board - is that the high end pro market tends to go "firmware" more anyway. The F5 4K conversion was fairly straightforward but unlicensed hacking is not made for the $6K-$15K cameras by and large.
