C100 Mark II Thoughts?

I don't think it was malice. I'm not sure, but I think someone posted it in the Canon Cinema forum to begin with. Then, someone else posted a similar thread here in the Industry News & Information forum. Then, a mod merged the two - but, in my opinion, into the wrong forum. It should be moved to this forum or the cycle will repeat.

So while this thread still exists, I want to put emphasis on the outstanding features of this camcorder: 60i AND 50i as well as AVCHD AND MP4. That's a technological milestone! And yes, that gorgeous 8mp super 35 sensor of the predecessor...

Edit: I retract from my sarcasm - partly - it seems the Mark II DOES have 60/50p? On Canonrumors was no word about that revolutionary feature, though.

1080p60 could be a hardware thing. What I'd like is an option to send off an old C100 & get the new LCD hinge, I know it is never going to happen, but it would be amazing to update the worst designed LCD placement on a camera since they started adding fold out LCDs to video cameras.

I agree, I usually visit "Industry News & Information" first when loading DVXUser and I feel it is the best place to put any news / announcement. Then after the initial announcement all further threads (like "I just ordered XXX, anyone else on a wait list?" or "What picture profile settings are you using") can go in the specific forum dedicated to that segment.

But what is done is done & it is nice that this thread now has a link to the other discussion.

Glad to see this thread still up! When I read the news about the new C100 late last night I immediately came here to read about it in the news section, to my surprise there was not a mention so I immediately started this thread. While not the most mind-blowing upgrade I thought it was worth a mention in the news section...

Having used the C cameras quite extensively for a variety of projects I almost pulled the trigger on a c100 right before the GH4 was released but my order didn’t go through and the very next day the GH4 was announced. My mind was blown by the specs and official Panasonic release video so I went with that and never looked back!

Had these specs and hardware been in the original c100 (which IMO they should’ve been) and for under $5k I may have stuck with my c100 order.

I have mixed feelings on this release, while I enjoy using the original c100 minus the awful screens, its low profile and delivers an amazing image. I just couldn’t justify paying more than $5k for a camera that couldn’t do at least 1080/60. This Mark II resolves that issue but to me it just seems too little too late.
Based on the reputation of the c100 and with all these refinements this seems like a solid release but I still feel its $1k overpriced especially as the competition heats up later this year and into early 2015.

I’ll still keep my eye on this camera, I’m curious to see if there are any significant IQ improvements and just how much better it is in low-light.
 
Yea ...I have a feeling that a c300 replacement/upgrade will be mandatory by Canons marketing team by NAB. If they do not include 4k...even if it's external only (via shogun) ....especially for a 15k price tag ....the entire industry would laugh them out of the building.

So, for that, I almost want to wait. If they released a 4k feature in the c300...with the normal upgrades....that would be interesting. Even still...they are competing with raw 4k cameras at that price point ...so if they were smart...they would bring the price down as well.
 
Pricepoint will be interesting, but in all likelyhood Canon will stick with their over pricing model, leaving the door open for the A7s and other dslrs to flourish. If they had come out with this feature list with version I they would have taken over the market for doco, corporate, wedding, and low-budget TV completely. Of course this would have sabotaged the 5DIII and probably the C300 as well.

4k…??? most major motion pictures are shot on alexas and kodak….scanned to 2k…or 2.5…for the alexa…if they are looking at this …

You can talk all you want about how great 4K on the GH4 or A7s or Samsun NX1 is, but I really like how the C100 I use at work fits smoothly into our workflow. And that is a big seller for a lot of people.

Built in ND, XLR, headphone jack, timecode, no record limits, etc. the C100 is a lot better at these things that nearly any DSLR still camera that also shoots video.

Yes, I'd love if Canon released a free firmware upgrade that gave the C100 everything these smaller, cheaper cameras have, but the usability of the C100 means that it is a better camera for when I have work to do. And that is the bottom line.

It is never "What is the best camera?" but "What is the best camera for me?" Canon will sell plenty of C100 II b/c it is the best camera on the market for a lot of users.

Personally I like Canon, but I think the Sony FS7 for the additional money will blow the doors of the Canon's C100 Mark II. 4k option was their only chance to stay in the game and without it this camera doesn't stand a chance, but who knows I could be wrong. I doubt it though.
