C100: C100 Mark II Price Drop to $2999

If Canon wanted to avoid conflict with their C200, a C100 MkIII would have to remain a 1080 HD camera, so no 4K recording.

I truly doubt that canon will deliver a $5000 camera without 4k. there are ? $2000 cams with better specs lol. They will not insult us like that with so many options like we have, if they want to be competitive. Anything less would be narcissistic on their part.

When the C200 first arrived the question I kept seeing posted on many forums was: "Where is 4K 10-bit recording?"

I can't see Canon releasing a C100 mk3 with 4K 10-bit internal recording, as this could greatly undermine C200 sales. ( you may not want to shoot everything in RAW-lite, especially long format events )

If the C100 mk3 is released with 4K 8-bit recording, then it's essentially a C200 without the ability to shoot RAW-lite. Is 8-bit good enough if your competition can shoot 10-bit ?

Agreed, the C100 MKII has better features but just for the look, I prefer the C100 MKI. I shot with the pair a few times and they had a pretty different look/color temp. If I hadn't had ridiculous client pressure to "get into 4K", I could have still been using the C100 MKI now and saved a LOT of money. And those clients who were all about "moving to 4K" mostly still haven't two years later.

I used to mostly shoot on the mkII but we rented the mkI a couple of times. I couldn't really tell the difference in image quality between the two, but the ergonomics of the mkII was so much better in my experience. How did you even use the mkI? The viewfinder is basically non-existent and the LCD has next to no movement.

Yes, I had the MK1 for a few years. Yes, EVF was close to useless and the screen movement was restricted. But the size, weight and image quality was so good we made it work, using the Ninja Blade as a screen, we shot two feature documentaries with it as well as a lot of BTS on shows like Prison Break, Homeland, etc. Great little camera.

I hope my friend doesn't see this. She bought one about 3 months ago. She must have my luck. Every time I buy something the price drops just when I can't get the difference... lol

Thanks. I'm only asking because the price is good enough right now I may consider giving it a second chance and picking one up myself. But only if there is a trick or two to using it better. Your secret was the Ninja Blade, which is a $500 add on itself. So that brings it closer in price to the mkII, which makes me thinnk maybe the mkII is still the better choice.

Honestly, all they'd need to do is remove RAW recording, HDR and SDI* and keep the fixed screen and I think there'd be a lot of differentiation. They couldn't charge more than around $4,000US for it though IMO.

*Maybe some other small things like 10-stop NDs and all the different color matrix options.

Is 8-bit good enough if your competition can shoot 10-bit ?

Yes, because 99.14% of people would use it to shoot WideDR for Youtube, websites or wedding couples with only minor tweaking in post. It's the right tool for that job, you literally only need a lens and an SD card and off you go.

(assumes the 8 bit would be as good as the C200 and you got exposure and WB etc correct in camera)

At the risk of igniting flames... Is it safe to say that the C100 mk ii is an upgrade from the Panny Af100, in terms of image quality?
Answering my own question here... now I almost feel silly for asking the above. After testing out a C100 Mk II... it's without question an upgrade in IQ from the AF100. I wasn't quite sure... had to see it for myself. Yep.

Yeah C100 footage still looks great. I'm literally watching these cameras go for about $1300 used on ebay and wondering why I'm still shooting on my GH4. I could certainly benefit from the NDs, XLRs and better low light ability. Sure I'd lose the 4K output, but so what. I've never once had a client ask me for 4K. At best I use it to punch in from time to time if I need to reframe in post, but not often. The savings in storage space would be nice. The bigger size would probably also make me look a little more professional to clients, which can't hurt. Plus I still have some Canon lenses.

Buying something a few months before NAB is always risky. If memory serves correct prices always drop on the old stuff a few months before the new shiny version gets announced.

Let's hope this means a c100 mkiii is coming along. I think it's about time for a full 4k lineup. The c200 body is fantastic, having the XLR's on the body is great. I'd love a c100 mk iii based on the c200 layout, 2x sd uhs-ii card slots, let's be honest it's going to be locked to 8 bit only but so long as it brings competent DPAF eye tracking then who cares. Though god I wish canon would just let the sky be the limit on external recordings but hey gotta force those higher end sales am I right.
