C100: c100 Mark II and possible successor

I want this too and know we won't get it....but I would take just the high frame rates...

One thing is for certain though....this is the last version of C100 without 4K....

Specs for 1D X MKII are leaking at usual places. Which leads me to believe - not the leaking, but the specs - that there will be no C 100 MK III/C200 in that $6,000-$8,000 price range in the near future. It makes no sense for Canon to compete with itself. 1D X MKII will basically be a slightly updated version of 1D C, with a new sensor and higher DR.

The C100 & 1D X are entirely different cameras used for different purposes and for different markets.

They will not stagnate the Cinema EOS line to protect their super duper high end pro DSLR (which will sell to a small % of the video market).

Anyone hoping for > 60p will be a bit sad.

But if it doesn't have at least XC-10 quality 4K then I think everyone will feel pretty ripped off and the FS5 will mop up. Regardless of if the C100 MKII is the perfect HD event camera, the fact is that expectation of a >$5K camera is now to have some form of 4K, even if it's pretty "basic" like the FS5 (8bit 420).

With the current hardware specs of the Canon C100 Mk2 what are the limitations for a future upgrade firmware (even with pay)

- SD card Interface max bitrate recordind? 95 Mbs ? 4K 4.2.0? AVCHD ?
- New H.265 Codec or Cinerform? or the c300 mark 1 codec mtx on the c100mk2
- 120FPS ? 1080p

(I tested a Sony FS5 and the Digital ND its amazing!!! smooth, no clics with big jumps in the exposure like the canons, the hand grip its miles away from the c100, but but...the colors of the sony sensors...not for me...not for now.)

totally agree with that

^I don't think the handgrip on the 100/II is all that good. Iris wheel placement leads to hand surgery and the grip is just placed too close to the body.

it is way better on the sony's. even though the fabric is more pleasant on the canon, the ergonomic is just better on the fs5.

Its better, and have a lote more features.
My c100 mark 1 grip have a little noise and its a little lose, even with full torque. (any users have this? or any solution?)

^Yes, the design is not such that it could prevent back-off of the collar. However, the collar typically stays put due to the fine pitch threads (thank God). The backlash in the indexing system causes the noise/loose feeling.

Yep, had the same on all mark I's I've ever had in hands.

Problem solved on mark II though.

What you should never forget is that the C100/II does have internal 4K, it just gets downsized. So 1080p is much better than than Full HD on a 5D Mark II/III.

As a user, I can only get a maximum of 44 Megabit on my phone line, but could get 500 Megabit on TV cable if I wanted. On Youtube, 4K/30 plays smooth, so not bandwith problems here. Just 4K/60 stopps every few seconds on the later website.

Canon Rumors think that 1D X MKII will be announced at the CES (or right around there). I would speculate that this puts a kibosh on C100 MKIII with 4K, at least, for the time being.

Sony have listen to what consumers want, and that replies in the huge sucess of the fs7 fs5 and a7xx lines.
I love the colors o my c100 and the menus, etc.
But the c100 mark2 need to be a 3000usd camera with 1080p 60p or a 5000usd with 4k avchd...at least.
I speak to several videomakers still using dslr frankeinstein rig cameras that are ready for the upgrade to the full body video camera...and the news ara bad for canon, not even one speak about the c100...for future upgrade.
I was in a showroom of audiovisual and cinema, and one seller tolds me that fs5 its selling like candys.
The bmc mini ursa, with 6m delay and no ND filters, and the c100 mark 2 with 5000usd stupid prices are pointless.
This its just a personal opinion, i love my c100. But the grip in the fs5 with Amazing Smooth ND filter, and digital zoom that works...with good codecs and 5000usd...its a simple choice if nothing happen with a c100mk2 firmware or a c100 mark3
Nice hollidays and sorry my bad English

In English, your name would be Pete Eagles, far more prosaic than it is in Portuguese.

As to C100 MKII (or C200, if you will), it'd be interesting to see what steps Sony takes, as they've definitely been the most aggressive of the bunch. If A99 (let's assume it's A7RII with FS7 codecs or something similar) comes at $4,000-$5,000, it will compete with Sony's own lineup ... but, if it does well, it will also effect (negatively) the sales numbers for (the currently unannounced) 1D X MKII, D5 and Panasonic's version of Leica SL. At that point, it kind of becomes a free-for-all and the entire market compacts. And then any company should just make as many models as it deems feasible without worrying about cannibalizing own sales.

PS. Red took a big step this week with its Scarlett-W announcement. They're a major player in the high end market (although ARRI dominates the big budget TV production) and it's slotting directly against C300 MKII and F5 and partially against FS7 on the low end and F55 and their own Epic Dragon on the high. No doubt Sony and Canon will have to respond no later than the NAB'16.

Ha! I just ordered a new C100 mk1 to compliment my other C100. The best deal going. Finally I don't have to use the 5D3 anymore and try and match it to the C100. I find myself always compromising on the image sacrificing the C100 for the 5D3.

been very interesting to read all the responses and keep an eye on peoples opinions.

From what I gather....the FS7 and FS5 has even made converts of even the biggest fans of Canon....I think that is based on price....the aggressive pricing and specs of these two have made people sit up and take notice.

I find it really interesting that the Canon C100 II is almost like a B movie now being consigned straight to video....amazing considering the success of the Mark I.

Goes to show that if your not willing to give people what they want.....they move on...

Sorry, I will never again give-in to the likes of Sony (or Apple). 35 years of dealing with both machines has worn me thin. Good luck cigarman with Sony....

How are you getting on....do you own an FS7 and a FS5?

And what do you do regarding Canon lenses??
Are the converters good?

I too would value your impressions Chappell, coming from Canon and going to the dark side of Sony. I could probably live with the terrible interface, confusing menus and ridiculous amounts of media and formats if I didn't hate the images that Sonys make. It's weird to consider spending a good amount of money on a camera that I really dislike the pictures from, but I too am in the same boat. C300 MKII is a great camera but so massively overpriced, I am considering the FS7 or whatever successor Sony introduces at NAB next year. They are smart and they are hitting the sweet spot with value.
