C100 + Internal Codec + Location Green Screen = ?

Do you think the C100 will provide adequate green screen keys on location? I'm currently using a 7D and it's barely usable but I'm nowhere near happy with it. Will the C100 be any better? Thanks.

Internal codec should be marginally better, but not spectacular. It's 4:2:0 same as a 7D. Going through the clean hdmi would be a better option.

Thank you for your reply. Sadly the HDMI adds another $1,000.00 to the cost (the cheaper HDMI recorder doesn't do the pulldown). Color me "almost persuaded".

If you're willing to pay the price difference from a 7D and a C100, and your main concern is Chromakey capabilities, you might as well go for the Canon XF300. I realize you're not interested in recording externally so, the XF305 would be overkill. There are very reasonably priced used XF300 in the market and the 4:2:2 MXF 50Mbps codec will work wonders in chromakey. On the other hand, if what you want is the typical DOF flexibility of a large sensor camera with interchangeable lenses, then the XF300 may not be the ideal choice.

I just bought a C100 after waiting for the Blackmagic Camera. I recognize you from those boards. :) The non green screened shorts I saw shot on the c100 were impressive, and my initial tests are a little mixed -- I'm going to need to be more confident using higher ISOs.

For keying, a good analog would be xa10 footage, since it's the same codec: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT6ipPGvPpo doesn't look spectacular, but passable.

The color profile you choose at high ISO is critical. Soon hope to post optized high ISO profile. Night and day difference. BTW the high ISO from C100 is blowing away FS100 shot under identical conditions and location.

I shot some blue screen tests yesterday both native C100 and Ninja 422, I will post samples when time allows. I did the same shots with a FS 700 w and w/o NanoFlash as well, lots of footage to sort through.

You shouldn't have too many green screen issues with the C 100. I've shot quite a bit of green screen with and AF 100 & internal codec and they have worked out very well. THe C 100 is has more resolution but I would be sure to lower detail in camera as noise produced by detail circuits is the enemy of decent chroma key results.

Same as mark, I've had some good results with the AF100 and would think the C100 should be as good if not better.

I wanted to bump this one to see if any more examples of the C100's AVCHD keying abilities have surfaced...

Thank you Gary for the wonderful side by side comparison. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling about the C100's native AVCHD. How did you do your key?

Keylight in After Effects. Not even close to how I'd actually pull a key for a real project, just quick 'n dirty to show how much effort it takes to get most of the way there.

Frankly, I wouldn't bother with an external recorder for keying (I rarely shoot chroma, and the tools are so advanced you can get a good key from almost anything these days, especially a key that's find for web use). I have a Ninja-2, but I got it to play with Log shooting and color correction passes in 4:2:2.

Does that mean that the Ninja 2 will get all there is out of the C100 for keying?

If you shoot to the Ninja-2, or any other external recorder, you will be squeezing every last bit of quality that can be had from the C100. It will make the image, at the very least, as good as the C300.
