BUG? 720p AVCHD = 30 frames only

Just a pointer here for those with imported cameras.

I often think there isn't much point shooting 1/30 in 60p (best use 24p!) other than for low light footage. But I sometimes use 1/30 to get around the flickering of PAL lights with my Japanese GH1. In PAL land, 1/30, 1/50 and 1/100 are flicker free.

So what if I want slow motion or true 60p, under electric PAL lighting with my NTSC GH1 and visa versa?

You can't use 1/60 - it'd flicker under PAL lighting. You'd need to up the shutter speed to 100 or 120 respectively to avoid flicker. This costs you quite a bit of low light performance. For a NTSC camera in PAL land 1/100 is (50hz x2) so that's evenly divided and thus flicker free.

The NTSC model is slightly less compromised here. Better slow mo and 1/100 instead of 1/120 (60hz x2) under mismatched electric lighting.

Thinking aloud then... if the shutter speed is not fixed, could changes in shutter speed during filming decided upon by the camera (in say A or P mode) account for some duplicated frames that some seem to have reported (if shutter speed drops too low)? When it comes down to it, taking all things into account, should one really always use full manual mode in 'Creative Motion Picture Mode' and just somehow make sure that the light doesn't change?

As I said in the second post, it's usually a result of shooting at 1/30th that I have done on other cameras ( slower than the needed 1/60th ) that this happens...

Thanks Pappas ... its just that the logic of why didn't click till Barry's post (6) and I realized that I'm trying to shoot with a >360 degree shutter

1/30 is the lowest and you're welcome about the footage.

I just ran out and shot some down and dirty midnight 1080p footage.
I will post that for everybody soon

Thanks again for more raw footage!!!

I read in this forum that the new firmware update allows using shutter speeds lower than 1/30 in video mode. Did you update it? If anyone has, can you tell what happens if you shoot 60p with a shutter slower than 1/30 (do you get triple o quadruple frames?)

I know this thread is old, but it helped me figure out why I was getting duplicate frames. Thanks!
