Broken LCD Screen

Hi to all,

I haven't really posted much...and now with a bad one. I was shooting a sports commercial this weekend and my 200 took a direct hit...breaking the lcd screen (perfectly attached, but looks like black, shattered glass). The camera is less than a week old (still under warranty)...and seems to work fine...but given panasonic's service record...what should I do? Should I just buy a better external and deal with it or send it off and be w/o a cam for who knows how many months? I don't have the luxury of being w/o a camera for too long...but would like to get it fixed at some point. I'm around LA if that makes any difference regarding service. Any feedback or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
LBA

It doesn't really matter if it's under warranty or not. I'd buy a better external because it probably won't cost much more and like you said you can't really wait around.

What does your insurence company say? Depending on your policy, they might cover costs of renting a replacement camera while your's is beeing repaired.
You will want a working LCD as there are a lot of things that only the LCD or Viewfinder do.

The Panasonic service center in Universal City can probably help you with a fairly quick turnaround. Insurance might cover the replacement.
Since the HVX200 is considered a "pro" camera (as opposed to the DVX which is sent elsewhere) , they can repair it at that facility.
Give them a call.
Hope this helps.

Thanks to you all. I am buying an external lcd and will be bringing it to the service center out here (when I have some down time). My insurance will not foot the bill...but it was worth a shot.

Thanks again,

"Accidental damage" coverage is a prety normal type of insurence coverage.

- Mikko ... has accidental, and intentional damage coverage for his gear. You just never know when some piece of gear pisses you off enough just a little too much.

I got the Lilliput 7", with a 7.2V to 12V battery converter. It will work until I can get it into Pana's repair shop. Looks OK...not great...but good enough for now. I usually use the evf for focus...so it's nice...
