Bought a Nikon Lens Adapter...Aperture Problems

Bought a 20 dollar adapter on eBay (never again, took a month to get here from Hong Kong), and I can't seem to figure out how to control the aperture. The lens doesn't have an aperture ring, and when I take it off the Nikon (D40) the aperture closes.

Am I missing something?

Just curious why are some of you buying Nikon glass, when most of the Canon glass is of a higher quality ? Or is there something I'm missing ?

I bought an old Nikon Manual zoom 80-200 f4 because it's an excellent lens, cheap and fully manual. The old manual lenses have a nice long focus throw, which many new lenses do not. Plus I like the aperture ring.

With that said, I really wish you could use old Canon FD lens over the Nikons. I have several old manual Nikons and Canon FD's, and the canons are much nicer mechanically (though not necessarily optically).

Really? Is there any empirical support for this?

And people use Nikon glass because it adapts to the 7D without an optical adapter which may degrade image quality...I'll find out for myself soon enough. FD adapter on order!

Agreed on price, I'm actually trying to sell off a few of my Canon L series lenses. The Canon L series lenses have an extremely smooth focus throw and a very sturdy compact design. I actually have a few older Nikons laying around too, maybe I'll give it a shot and see if I can tell the difference....

"My wife has a few lenses for her D40. Figured I'd save some money."

Wont you lose control of the lens if it's not made for that camera ?

Yes you are missing the aperture ring because you nikon lens is a G lens

so as above your options are..

16-net expensive adapter
non G nikon lenses

OR..

you G lens has a little lever at the back

wiggle it and you will see the aperture open up

you may - at your own risk - be able to cut a little piece of card in a V shape and wedge the aperture open

that will get you shooting with this lens

ive done it with my not cheap 70-200 2.8 nikkor with no problems
