Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

Digital Bolex image quality - Exclusive look at sensor samples and footage,

Quote,

Roald’s Conclusion
“Blackmagic (CMOS) images and my (CCD) images are very different in sharpness, colors, noise pattern etc. I liked a few BMCC videos on vimeo, but the newer ones from the first users often looks unsharp with bad colors and contrast. Maybe because of the new workflow, where users have to do more in post. Maybe because of bad exposure.
“The greatest disadvantage is the rolling shutter of the BMCC which for me disqualifies it for many purposes.
“Compared to the Ikonoskop I get a much better image out of the box (with the Digital Bolex’s sensor). No magenta issue. Since the KAI-04050 is of the same line as the KAI-02150 (Ikonoskop), all other aspects are nearly equal (dynamic range, etc.) (Editor’s note: But for much less money!) I have also a smaller camera with the KAI-02150 and will do some testing with it later on.”

Who in their right mind would shoot slides?? First off, they all look super soft, I was focusing on the slide frame as opposed to the actual pic because I have no way of knowing if the actual pic is even sharp. Bad example, terrible subject, soft images. = big deal.

I know what you're saying, strange choice of subject to shoot but I've watched it a few times over now and the grain structure and colour tones are looking nice, need more footage. . .

Digital Bolex image quality - Exclusive look at sensor samples and footage,

You should add the disclaimer that this is using the same sensor as found in the DB (which is an "off-the-shelf" sensor as it were) and in no way gives an absolute picture of what the final image will look like.

I'm just passing on information found on the internet and am not interested in a negative tone.

A DNG raw camera has no inherent look to it beyond the limiting characteristics of the sensor itself. The look is completely defined and applied by the user in post processing. Roald is developing DNG processing software for the D16 and Ikonoskop. the samples are his.
Looks pretty good so far.

Well, there's this:

We are getting signal from the sensor, through the sensor board, through the FPGA, into the DSP and we are now tweaking to get a nice image!

Well, there's this:

Tweaking in this case means calibrating analog gain levels for the sensor, 16 bit AD conversion and 12 bit DNG output conversion for max usable DR. What comes out is still an unprocessed raw Bayer image file with whatever base meta data profile is included in the camera firmware. The metadata defines how the image previews in the raw processor before you do anything to it, but you are free to change it at will.

That is, without a doubt, the worst "test" footage I have ever seen (and the bar on that has been lowered significantly in the past few years, so that's quite an accomplishment).

Not surprised by any of this, including the dubious choice of releasing/leaking the footage to that joke of a camera blog.

Let's have more "information"/defense from the DB marketing team now, it's actually getting quite entertaining.

This is not D16 camera footage but footage with the same sensor that will be in the D16, agreed the subject matter is not the best but at the moment this is all there is. I'm getting sick of the negativity on this forum, if you've got no interest in the camera or its development why comment at all?

To counter the BS being put forth by the fanboys/marketing team.

I'm no fanboy and only hope my investment in the kickstarter campaign and this camera pays off. I posted the link as is relevant to the development of the D16 camera. I agree the subject matter of the footage is not great and the misleading title on EOSHD is also not correct but it would be nice to hear constructive criticism instead of the usual negative attacks, surely most people on here are interested in the development of an independent camera company and their first camera, if in weeks/months the actual footage from the camera turns out to be great I'm sure everyone will be singing a different tune.

The footage has nothing to do with Digital Bolex directly, this is an independent 3rd party developing raw processor software for cinema DNG cameras using industrial camera heads for test footage.

That is where the problem lies- We still haven't seen ONE single frame shot with the actual camera- yet we keep seeing links with the headline: D16 footage. Until there is actual D16 footage, the speculation will continue, that's the nature of any release/product/gizmo/gadget/etc.
