Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

Hi. I started this thread. I am the co-developer of the camera.

I was also wondering like LyleGorch about your identity. This thread is since early 2012, so it is no possible for everybody to remember. Creating a signature will definitely be of help.

When can we expect the EF mount version to be available?

EF dumb mount was the first developed after the C-mount. It should be available by the time the second run of cameras are released, same with M4/3. The camera has user interchangeable lens mounts like RED Scarlet/Epic, so there won't be a different version of the camera, just new mounts for different lens standards.

Might be awhile before you see electronic lens mounts though.

I don't really see a point of making MFT or EF dumb mounts for D16. All EF lenses will have enormous crop factor, changing pretty much every lens into a telephoto on S16 sensor. Secondly, most of MFT and EF lenses have electronic iris control. There is a handful of lenses, but vast majority of both kinds will not be possible to use- after all- what is the point of the lens if you can't adjust aperture? Hope that they make B4 adapter, as it would be by far the best choice.

There are modest selections of manual cinema glass for EF and MFT as well as vintage glass that can be adapted. I recently picked up a Minolta MD to C-mount adapter to use with my Rokkors, but that is just for use with the 1" full frame 4:3 format of the sensor for some experimental stuff. B4 lenses will not properly cover the D16 without an expensive extender/optical adapter. 16mm image circle is 12.75mm S16mm is 15mm vs 11mm for B4 2/3" format. B4 lenses would also have to be corrected for focal plane sensor vs 3 chip prism to eliminate chromatic aberration. Hot Rod cameras will be making the PL mount for the D16 and there are aftermarket B4 to PL adapters available that do the optical correction.

The D16 will work best with native cinema lenses designed for S16mm at 2k and 16mm at 1080p formats though. I tend to agree with you about other lens formats. It is amusing to see the effort and expense some people suffer thru to adapt lenses that won't necessarily perform well because their optical design is not optimal for the format rather than just buy what the camera is designed for in the first place. A fully implemented electronic MFT mount would be a great option though with the new Pansonic 12-35 and 35-100 OIS glass with auto functions and manual controls via the encoder crank.

Actually B4 lenses with 2x extender work with MFT sensor, so they would also work with S16- which is a smaller sensor size.
Here is link to an article covering the topic, including charts for Canon and Fujinon lenses. http://www.streamingmedia.com/Produ...oth-Zooming-DSLR-Production-Part-1-80668.aspx. As long as there is an extender- you will get the whole sensor covered. The crop factor for MFT sensor is 4.3x, don't know what it would be for S16- but it will be less. The advatage of B4 is having ability to servo zoom, and more importantly- parafocal lens! Now a 1.7 lens will be about F3.2 when extender is engaged, but it should be plenty good for a well lit scene.

s16mm and 16mm cinema zooms are parfocal and constant aperture throughout their range for the most part. They will perform significantly better than most B4 lenses unless you add optical correction for the prism aberrations. and if you are comparing lenses of similar quality in the used market, cost about the same. They can be fitted with servo motors if you really need them, but most of us that use zooms as variable primes most of the time anyway.

Just so D-bolex people know there is already a c-mount to PL adapter available. I use it on my A-Cam DII. It's available at visual products and very well made. I am using a 11-165 canon cine zoom with it and getting amazing results. http://visualproducts.com/storeProductDetail01.asp?productID=479&Cat=11

Nice option, but I would rather have a proper PL mount designed for the camera as it will be much stronger and more stable. Some lenses that could be used without external support on a dedicated mount would need rails on the C-mount adapter. Hot Rod cameras is making the PL mount for the D16. Mount, not adapter.

I understand what youre saying. For me personally, I would not want to give up the option of c-mount entirely for a sturdier PL solution. Speaking from experience with my adapter on the A-CAM its super rock solid with a 5 pound lens hanging off the front. The only better option would be the P+S IMS setup. I guess if you have world class set of PL lenses then there's no need to even think about C-mount lenses. Just so many interesting options with c- to give up especially with a camera as interesting as the d-bolex.

The Bolex lens mounts are user interchangeable. No need to give up anything. It is a modular camera.
