Bolex D16: RAW, 16/Super 16 sensor size, costs less than MkIII

It's the web. One the primary responsibilities of using it is understanding how much information is real and how much is manufactured to keep conversations going, no matter what the value.

In the pre-web world things like product examples were demonstrated to interested parties when there was something of substance and merit to convey - one argument for the pre-web way of doing some things.

I give these people all the credit in the world for going out with a cool vision and doing all the things it takes to realize it - not an easy task.
But it's one thing to show the evolution of a body design and features/functions. When it comes to cameras and lenses, the bottom line will always be the IQ.
Best to wait until you actually have some to show before even opening that door.

That is where the problem lies- We still haven't seen ONE single frame shot with the actual camera- yet we keep seeing links with the headline: D16 footage. Until there is actual D16 footage, the speculation will continue, that's the nature of any release/product/gizmo/gadget/etc.

DB is at the firmware debugging stage for the production prototype, shouldn't be too much longer.

The body is way smaller than I thought. Hope the image is good because the rest of the camera get's more and more apealing to me.

To bad it ain't completly black or darkgrey.

that 3d printed/ ABS plastic lens mount is an accident waiting to happen, people questioning the strength and durability of aluminum lens mounts ain't seen nothing yet!

excuse me!?
All I did was piont out that ABS (the stuff Lego is made from) probably isn't the best choice of material for a lens mount

Aperently they are using a Maker-bot to print these so they may even be using PLA which from what I understand is even less durable

They could always get Shapeways to produce these in stainless steal but that would cost a fortune

The plastic one is a working prototype. Production mounts are metal. 3D print prototyping is a common method of design proofing these days before you go to the expense of machining a design that may not be accurate. 3D prints can be accurate to .001" for development and you can print and test several versions in a day.

Could you let me know who and how this picture was taken w/ Aronofsky w/ the NON-WORKING Digital Bolex? Really, how'd you talk him into this???
darren-aronofsky-d16-digital-bolex.jpeg

I mean...With Oldman, I totally understand, since... the camera (IKONOSKOP A-CAM DII), is a working device... but to get a Aronofsky to photo shoot w a model/idea/toy camera??? WOW? You guys are really blowing my mind....

Step 1: Go to Party where Darren Aronofsky will be present.
Step 2: Ask Aronofsky for a photo and give him the prototype camera, telling him to hold it like a phaser from Star Trek.
Step 3: ????
Step 4: PROFIT!

If DigitalBolex investors didn't so vigorously/blindly defend a camera THEY HAVE NEVER USED then this negative backlash wouldn't have legs.

I wonder if the company is paying attention to the PR damage these investors are causing.

Hahaha, just what I expected from you Nothing, nice try.

Maybe you should come over to the digital Bolex forum and pay more attention to the cameras developments or If you're so worried about the PR maybe you should tell them yourself on the live webchats.

Everyone started somewhere including you and I and they have come pretty far now, I'm looking forward to seeing you eat you're words very soon..

Aside from the typical sniping that happens whenever someone does something new and it involves the web, DB continues to blaze a new trail which in and of itself is praise worthy in my book.
Working day to day building brands for everything from new restaurant franchises to LED lighting companies, I'm certainly impressed with what they've done in such a short while.

I remember not long ago this being considered a farce, and that their wasn't any way the Bolex was going license it etc.

Well here they are, almost, and in the world of product and brand development, at an amazing pace frankly.

Ohh! Really like this! That encoder crank better be able to do manual crank framerates like old cameras. That would be wonderful.

What would be really great, for outdoors, is a detachable eye loop for the screen. Think a custom formed/angled zacuto-like eye piece.

Yeah hopefully, manual frame rates and in camera follow focus control (with another planned accessory for C-Mount lenses)

Hand cranked frame rates are definitely one of the primary uses planned for the crank. At present the other major use planned is electronic follow focus with a motorized lens mount. There has also been discussion of recording crank input as meta data that could be applied to creative FX in post.

Those who have not followed the development of the D16 closely may have a hard time understanding why some of us are so enthusiastic about its potential. For those of us who used to shoot Bolexes for everything from docs to narrative films to experimental art films to animation, it is shaping up to be a really fun affordable unique alternative to the same old, same old mass market commercial cameras anywhere near its price range.
