BluRay or HDDVD? Ha! Try Iomega.

imagine uncompressed feature length sd............ That woul look great.....

hd tooo.... but like... Straight up AVI on dvd. no gooey reds, with every drop of resolution possible and every color under the rainbow........

DROOOOOOL.........

...So there you go!

...So there you go!

Now panasonic can talk to Iomega about building a device to download from P2 to this 800GB disk.

Maybe a device that can store individual takes from P2 to harddrive, and then to this disk after 800GB of data has acrued.

reservoir makes a point about iomega's reputation and being "black-balled" due to fatal unreliability.
Let's hope this new technology proves more useful than prior generations.

Panasonic will obviously be sticking to P2 cards in the cameras for a long long time, but it doesn't
so much matter since P2 is only temporary storage. The "IT Workflow" really becomes fun when
thinking about all the ways you'll have to archive. This wouldn't even be an option with tape.

This announcement is a step in the right direction.

I agree with Wells. Archiving might actually become *fun* instead of a chore or a hassle.

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge!!

Nice find...
so close to a TB
come on! just 200 more GB!

Well, I guess now we all know who picked up the ball and ran with it during the Blu Ray and HD DVD bickering, haha! Didn't take them long to get to the goal did it? It seems like everyone is out to make Sony look like asses, not like Sony didn't already make themselves look like asses.

Still can't believe it...damn near a TB on a DVD!?

800gb on disc already? Good grief we're jumping fast people!:cheesy:

Still, just because this holds 800gb per disk doesn't mean that we'll be getting a lot of help with the P2 workflow. There's still the matter of offloading and I'm pretty sure our laptops today won't have enough storage to offload for the full 800gb. It'd be kind of a waste of discs because you can only put about 80gb worth of footage on each burn (assuming your laptop has a 100gb HDD). I'd much rather use external HDD's myself via a 5.25" USB 2.0/Firewire conversion kit and several desktop HDD's, cheaper than buying seperate external HDD kits by almost $200 or more and I can swap the HDD's out while the P2 is offloading to the laptop:thumbsup: . That's my strategy for P2 at least.

Remember, Jacob, that Sony and Matsushita are co-developers in the Blu-Ray system.
I agree that Sony has, in more recent years, made little effort not to appear like asses.

According to the article, 800GB is a theoretical number. All they have said is the media could "potentially hold 40-100 times more information" and "Iomega is working to investigate the commercial feasibility of this format."

Don't hold your breath on this one, folks. Smells like future vaporware to me.

I agree, although it sounds cool, there doesn't seem to be a real product here and even if there were I doubt it would have much effect on the roll out of Blu-ray and HDDVD in the near future.

If it could be plugged in and used today that would have an impact, but anything short of that won't make much of a difference.

Yeah, this is speculative, at best. This kind of research is great, but it'll be a looong time before this sees the light of day, if ever. I'd bet on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD for the forseeable future.

Yea I don't see this coming any time soon, Blue-Ray and HD-DVD have been in development for a long time, and still haven't seen the light of day, but at least we know they are more than theory. I don't trust IOMEGA. When have they ever made a product with any shelf life? I mean the JAZZ sucked, and the ZIP has gone away.

the zip is gone now, but it reigned for a few years before CDs got cheap enough (at least in the graphics world). I agree Iomega blew it with the JAZ drive and I think they had one or two attempts after that that tanked.

I know this is specs only and if we do see this, it wont be for a long time, but its still fun to think about... :)

Wow! Thats pretty awesome. Hmmmm I wonder how Blu-Ray will far now? I heard that TDK had recently broke the Blu-Ray capacity record with 100GB disks but this is just....a lot more, lol.

Where did you hear that? Sony is selling bluray cameras at a brisk pace. Perhaps you are talking about consumer DVD players which have not really hit the market yet and will not until all contracts with motion picture companies are dotted. Its a fantastic format. Best of all, it require no reengineering to add more layers to a DVD so you can record more information. It will be a big part of future television production as I see it.

Blue-Ray DVD while the Japanese have just gotten Recorders, it has been development for a long time, and their currently is a format war going on with it and HD-DVD. And they are trying to work out a joint deal to make one format, though they are now saying they may do one after both release See this Yahoo News Article which could make all first generation HD-DVD and Blue-Players and recorders obsolete.

And what I was saying is that is that this Iomega is only in development, they haven't shown any working prototypes yet which could take some to to do.
