BluRay or HDDVD? Ha! Try Iomega.

from the article, "the patent covers a novel technique of encoding data" ....
It's a patent for a "Technique". They still do not have a working physical model.
I have a "technique" that transports me from one location to another by atomizing the particles into electrons and sending them over fibre optic lines and then re-atomizing them at the other end.........
I just haven't been able to get it to work yet... oh well, I'll keep trying.

Holographic storage technology venture capital enterprises have sprung up since the early 1990s--none have ever delivered a shipping product. Every one of those companies had issued similar-sounding press releases, promising product in "the fourth quarter" of the following year. According to the InPhase press release, they state that, "InPhase expects to introduce its product, which is still in development, by the fourth quarter of 2006." Note the words "expects" and "still in development." This means they're simply getting another round of financing together.

As far as the Iomega press release, a technology concept filed with the patent office is still often years away from actual shipping product (not to mention, a working prototype). Nevertheless, it's a smart-sounding idea which employs the combination of multi-dimensional encoding techniques which are based on existing technologies (e.g., reflectivity, polarization, phase change, etc.)--unlike holographic storage technology, which is an entirely new, unproven technology.

I can't wait until we start getting cameras that record HD to holographic memory... seems like the stuff will be cheap enough when it comes out....
