Bloody overheating

Yeah I can see that logic and I know for sure I have nothing I that nature for about a month now. After that I have a few unknowns. Pete your logic is sound and makes for a better business practices for sure. I'm just trying to get a handle on what's available for how much. That and venting.

Thanks a lot to everybody for your words of wisdom and advice. We all benefit from our shared experience.

This is odd - I've seen the overheat icon twice - both outdoors, in Texas summers, 110-ish farenheit in the sun.

I did a three hour shoot with my t2i last week - on a shoulder mount with a loupe and matte box. Shot constantly, but indoors, average room temperature. Zero trouble.

There's a lot of audio discussion in this thread but I don't think of a DSLR as a camera to even try to capture useable audio with. But I've only had overheat issues (T2i) in the kind of heat that... if the overheat icon's flashing, it means the shooter should get in the shade and have some water! (We had a brutal summer down here...)

treynolds: did you try to enable powersaving in ML? (especially display off while recording). This should cool down quite a bit.

Also, lower frame rates (24p, 25p) draw less power.

Thanks for the tips a1ex. I was shooting in 30p because it was hip hop dancers and I wanted to be able to slow it down in post but I don't like the 720p settings. I will play with the power saving options and see what I can get.

what i find is that some of these canons vary from body to body. I'd had people say the 7d overheats like crazy and i also even used one that overheated alot for a shoot. However on my personal 7d i've had overheat 3 times in near to 3 years. However i dont think the one I used on the shoot that was overheating like mad had the latest firmware.

I had a lot of problems with overheating on the T2i, which is one of the reasons I sold it and bought the 7D. I've had no overheating problems with the 7D and I've shot all day on my shoots with musicians on stage (you can see my work with it on Vimeo http://vimeo.com/mountainstone/videos and www.markpearsonmusic.com, all the studio shots with Mark Pearson feature a 7D along with xf305 and GH2).

Also, a young videographer that I worked with had a T3i, and his never overheated, BUT, he had the extended battery grip option. His opinion was that moving the batteries out of the main body was the way to avoid overheating. The 7D has their battery changed from the t2i, so I'm willing to go along with that thought, since the chip set is essentially the same. So if you want ML then maybe think about getting a battery grip rather than sell your camera?

Canon 60d does not overheat, sell your T2i and buy a 60d. Also for how cheap t2i camera is you can buy two of them and your problems will be gone. Frustration is not being prepared and you were not prepared. T2i and all dslrs are not "video" cameras, remember that.

Haven't had an overheat yet- but at these prices I'd consider a backup body as cost of doing business if it became an issue...

If you don't want to upgrade to an entirely new platform, I'd go for a second T2i body- they are so cheap right now, and work really great.

I personally never had an overheating issue, and I've used Magic Lantern to keep the camera alive shooting for over an hour at a time. But, if it ever did happen, I roll with more than one camera just in case.

Another option, using an external monitor or ML to turn the display off while shooting, in addition to the battery grip, should help keep it cool for longer (I would assume, based on other user's theories).
Also, what firmware are you running? It has been widely speculated that the earlier firmwares report overheating sooner. You should have at least 1.0.9, I think.

By the way, for those that say the 7D is less prone to overheating, I'd say from my own observation that this is not true. If anything, the 7D seemed to overheat SOONER than the T2i (and I would guess this is because of the dual Digic chips creating 2x as much heat). But in general, it seems that later T2i and 7D purchasers aren't complaining as much- those who complained about the 7D overheating got a T2i later, and said it didn't suffer from it, and those who started with overheating T2is upgraded to a 7D and said the same. Which tells me one of two things:
Either the firmware has been updated to allow a higher threshold of heat (some folks never updated their camera firmware anyway), or they have silently changed something on the hardware production line so that newer ones aren't as prone to heat up.

Something to think about.

Thanks guys.
I am already using a battery grip but i have been looking into an external monitor quite a lot lately. I figured its an easy upgrade that i can use with any body i move up to for the next couple of years. I also like the idea of keeping my T2i as a backup body but i dont know if that's doable at this time just budget-wise. As far as i know i am running the latest firmware.(just checked and it reads 1.0.9-ml).

mabye its time to buy this little guy

That was my other choice. a bit more expensive than the other one i was looking into but does have some cool features
