Blackmagic Video Assist - 1080p 10-bit monitor/recorder

Yep can't wait..this is what I have been waiting for it has everything I wanted in a small monitor except 4K. But for the price it will work perfectly, hopefully the screen comes out in good shape.

Well - it just murdered the entire Atomos Ninja and Samurai line....

If it has 1080p at 60fps it has indeed murdered the Atomos line. I really wanted a recorder war so that prices crashes down, but I did not expect it would be that much. The 135% makes me think that the screen is not IPS, but we will have to see.

Having owned a few BM stuff I'm not to confident about this monitor/recorder. There are so many features one want in a monitor and the quality of the display is essential. Let's wait and see when it ends up at a decent reviewer.

typically if a company uses IPS they will say they do. To keep the cost down BM is likely using TFT panels and maybe even 6 bit. I am more concerned about the use of a 6 bit panel.

I am super excited about this monitor but we have to keep in mind we know zero right now about the quality of the panel itself. We don't even know brightness or contrast yet. I'm sure it will not be garbage but don't sell off your 8bit IPS panels just yet.

To be honest I would have also liked to see a non recording version for cheaper. As many of us move to a complete 4k workflow the need to record HD becomes less attractive. I already have HD external recorders that get very little use anymore. Having just a good full HD monitor at a price like $395.00 would have been another killer option for those who don't need to record externally or prefer to record 4k externally.

It's all speculative until we know what software it runs: does it have waveform, how about is peaking implemented? And so on. It looks interesting for $500 - and it will kill stuff like this:

MeticaFM 7 HDMI Plus

which one would you rather pay $500 for?

Actually not as easy of a choice since the MeticaFM is IPS and 8 bit. One needs to determine what is a better field monitor. Resolution vs overall exposure and color. Maybe BM will shock us all and they are using 8bit but considering the angle of view I highly doubt it is ips.

Yeah don't see any peaking on it which is strange when you call a product
[h=3]High resolution, large monitor for perfect focus and framing![/h]I mean with a 5 inch screen even in 1080p, you cannot relly on it without any focus assist even if it is high resolution.

Are people sure about 60p in 1080p because I see it only as supported displaying solution and not recording, in fact some detail are very vague even in the tech spec sheet.

there is focus peaking, zebras, and histogram, also framing guides.

Confirmed? Link?

The NINJA series of recorders is pretty much a direct comparison, and those monitors are not great....for twice the price.

I don't see how this is intended to be a competitor for high-quality "Monitor Only" screens. This is a Recorder/Monitor that offers almost exactly what the Ninja and Samurai offer.

The Ninja 2 yes, but the Ninja Blade/samurai have very good screen. I am not saying it is a bad product as it looks better than the Ninja 2 for $ 200 less.

Freaking micro sdi connectors. Crap

I second that. You would think that they learned something from Atomos, who they are essentially targeting and ripping off.
Atoms went from mini to normal connectors when their 5" FULL HD recorders updated to Blade.
By the way the CEO of Atomos used to work for Blackmagic.

well except that this has 1920x1080 resolution vs 1280x720. Can be a big deal and can be a good alternative to focus peaking. Focus peaking is not an exact science and has a bit of a gray area for accuracy. If one wants a monitor mainly for focus then 1920x1080 is the way to go. If one also wants a monitor that has good color and exposure that may be another story and we will only really know once people get their hands on them to test out.

it seems like there are quite a few smartphones out there using 5" IPS LCD screens, one would think that they are in enough quantity that BM or any manufacturer could pick them up to use in a device like this for a relatively low price.

Advantages over Atomos Ninjas

-1080p 60p recording
-Both SDI and HDMI compatiable
-1920x1080 vs 720p panel resolution
-Smaller and lighter,
-Uses small SD cards vs SSDs
-It's MUCH cheaper

Theae are the stuff that don't exist in any Atomos recorder up to 1200$ (ninja/blade/samaurai)

Perhaps the Atomos ones will have an advantage in the panel quality that's worth giving up the previously mentioned benefits.

my apology, it does not have peaking and zebras...probably will have as a firmware update.
