BlackMagic - URSA Mini

To say the Ursa Mini 4.6k blows away the FS7 is not correct. The images are great but good cinematography techniques like proper lighting, good backgrounds, etc... are involved with these images. These would look equally as good on an FS7--no question. That and good glass. Both are fine cameras and you can't go wrong with either.

Saying it blows it away was a little strong, but if you'd like a nice, organic (really don't like to use this word, but it's true) cinematic image out-of-the box with ProRes in Film or Video Dynamic Range, it's truly an amazing image. No tweaking of PP, settings, etc.

Right there with you. Yes, the images look great. I own an FS7 and hoping to get one of these too. Only wish they would put a Nikon F mount on it since I own some great Nikon glass. They're missing a big market as a lot of us own Nikon glass. I hope they consider it down the road. Exciting times no doubt. That is the best footage I've seen from the camera so far.

I wanna see some 4.6k footage. I saw an interview with one of the BM people where they mentioned they've spent around 10 million dollars developing it.

Is that accurate? If it is, is that a normal # for R&D?

It's pretty normal for custom semiconductor manufacturing. That cost probably includes designing the new sensor (i.e. hiring the semiconductor partner to design it to BMD's specs), spin out engineering prototypes for BMD to test and integrate, and likely includes a production run of sensors. It probably also includes BMD's testing since they have to have their own engineers working on the testing and integration. Custom semiconductors are expensive. It's why companies like Digital Bolex and Black Magic and AJA and AXIOM started out with already available sensors for their first cameras, instead of custom designing them.

This does reflect that BMD is planning for long term. They're not looking just at the next NAB, they're looking beyond that... this sensor was very likely a multi-year development project, from inception to now.

Looks great....not sure how it looks different in any way from the existing BM 4K cameras? It is the same sensor? Colors look great, skin looks great....can't wait to see what the 4.6k sensor can do because this one still has a little limited DR for me....

yes its the same sensor as in 4k camera.

edit: everybody is waiting 4.6 sensor that should be way better.

Sony's investing $4,000,000,000 to build a sensor plant.

As to BMD - with a 50% margin off MAP, they'd need to sell about 4,000 units to break even and they have probably have more pre-orders than that already. And that includes both the 4.6 URSA Mini and URSA Heavy for their entire production runs.

Have you heard of any person in video/film industry that doesn't want/will buy one eventually? I didn't... :) This will be massive success, a lot bigger then fs7 sales.

Seems to me that with the existing FPN problem with the 4K sensor BMD should just make the Ursa Mini and the latest version of the Ursa 4.6K only and leave it at that. Leave the 4K sensor in the legacy products and move forward. I understand the lower price points to move product but why taint the new product line with a previous sensor with known issues.

Agreed. It seems unnecessarily confusing. imagine a few people thinking they are renting or hiring the much better 4.6K sensor and getting burned with the Low ISO, FPN 4K sensor.

Again, it's because IT IS like the other BM cameras...not the new sensor. The older 4K sensor has lots of trouble with highlights/clipping. But on the other hand, for something like this, no one cares about clipping.

RED had Epic bodies with different sensors in them, doesn't seem to have done them any harm
