BlackMagic - URSA Mini

Isn't the ursa like half the price of the FS7 though?

URSA Mini 4.6k is $5k, EVF is $1.5k, & Baseplate is $500, so $7k for a basic package.

FS7 is $8k.

URSA's media is less expensive, but likely eats more of it, & needs ND filters. FS7's batteries are less expensive & the Sony is likely more power efficient.

Prices are comparable.

I own a FS7 & have a non-refundable deposit on the URSA 4.6k + EVF. Most likely I won't keep both, but only time will tell which is a more appropriate production tool (for my needs).

"?.....I have trouble going with that statement.....until we see the production version and can confirm or deny there is no "Black Sun" or "Purple Sun" or other issues, it's hard to say it's more of a camera than the FS7....and don't get me wrong, I'm hoping there is no issues and this camera will be a success....."

Do you sell them Jim?
Yes....like I said I'm hoping....

FS7 has better DR, about 1.5 stops if you go by Sony's white papers (slog3 vs slog2). URSA mini should have even more, if you believe BM's claims.

Most FS7 users prefer SLog3.Cine which isn't available on Sony's less expensive cameras.

Not arguing with that. My point was that A7RII still delivers a lot for its $3,200 and offers a feasible alternative to FS7 and URSA Mini in a more affordable package. Some shooters will find the step up difference worthy of the advantages offered; others will stay with A7RII and its features for a lot less. Look at it this way, Z06 isn't a Ferrari California but still a heck of a sports car and is $200,000 less. That suffices for a lot of people, if they're looking for a sports car and not just a badge.

I am waiting for the Mini to come out so I can test it against the FS7. I have used the 7 numerous times so I just need to do the same with the Mini. I have placed a deposit on the mini and if its up to snuff I will keep it, if not I will return it for an FS7.

Also I have seen the BMD shouldermount quoted a few times as costing $500 when its actually $395. That 100 bucks can go along way lol.

BMD accessories for the URSA Mini are nicely priced but hopefully Shape will offer a quick adjust arm similar to their FS7's.

That would be awesome, I absolutely love Shape products. Best accessory I have bought in the past two years is one of there shoulder rigs.

A7RII is a different league. It's still just a body, once you'll add up all that stuff to make it similar to FS7/Ursa Mini you will end up almost with the same price.

I mean if you want to knock the moire I get it, BUT THE SKIN TONES? That is largely be lauded as some of the best south of Alexa?

At a minimum, south of Alexa, Amira, F35, F65 and Varicam 35. But I'm sure a huge crowd would put the C300 in there too. Considering how popular that camera is and that it costs almost 10x what some Blackmagic cameras cost and still sold loads, it would be hard to argue with them.

But I agree that the skin TEXTURE from the Blackmagic camera is harsh. It has that sharpened in post look out of the box.

Maybe when he said no professional would use it he meant high end professionals. If that I would agree. I have never seen them in high end jobs as the A cam.

Dear Abby,

I'm in love with the sexiest woman I've ever met. I never thought a guy like me would meet a woman like this and do the things we do together. But you know, I have to bash her because she annoys the sh&* out of me by being late all the time...for the incredible nights that I never thought I'd be able to enjoy.

Dear Abby,

I 'met' this amazing woman on the Internet. She showed me her picture and
everything....she looks amazing. We seem to get along great. She says she
will meet up with me for real, in person in July....or August.....or September. If
not, then October or November for sure. Definitely before the year ends in
December. Once we meet up in person, I'm sure everything will be awesome.
I never thought I could have a woman like her. We are going to have the best
times together!

Since I couldn't meet her in person yet, I just gave her my credit card number.
It's not like I could leave money on her nightstand. What could go wrong?

Prices are dropping - URSA Mini 4K (i.e., old sensor) is down to $2,995 (whenever it ships).

Thw original (heavy) URSA is also a grand off, down to $3,995 now.

It's V2 of the "old" sensor. No one really knows what's different about it besides the 120fps in UHD on the URSA.

V1 of the "old" sensor maxed out at 80fps on the URSA.

Not sure how it would affect the MINI.

According to what I heard from BMD, the mini 4k is using the v2 4k sensor. Not that it changes much; it's still a great camera at a great price, and a very good choice for people whose budgets won't support a 4.6k mini.

It was always 2995$. And it's the same sensor in the Production camera, the AJA Cion and Axiom and Large URSA. It's a great value at 2995$ really as it's the same price as the production camera but you get all that extra body, quite remarkeable.

I hope the BM people I spoke to were mistaken in it being the same sensor with a different body, but even if it's not, as we saw on the large ursa although it had the same sensor the FPN issues were fixed and the frame rates were much higher with effectively quite better lowlight performamce, I'd expect the same with the new URSA Mini 4K. No differences in Resolution, DR, ISO performance, Size, colours, but lack of FPN and higher frame rates. I was also told the black sun spot is still there, but not on the 4.6K model.

Amazing deal...really unbelievable.

On a side note, many URSAs are still shipping with V1 of the sensor because of old stock, so if anyone is reading this and wants to buy an URSA with a V2 sensor (120fps in UHD), you need to ask your store/company/etc.

My URSA, for example, is V1, which was bought in September 2014. I don't have the option of 120fps in UHD. Only 80fps in UHD.

People like to claim that it's an inferior sensor, but the reality is that it's an excuse to hide bad cinematography. I'm doing a lot of shooting these days with a Cion and I'm getting wonderful results with it, and I have an AXIOM Beta and Ursa Mini on pre-order.
