BlackMagic - URSA Mini

PS. And, yes, A7RII competes against URA Mini and FS7 competes against URSA Mini. They just do it off different ends, sort of like Z370 competes against the Cayman on the lower end while GTR does on the higher.[/QUOTE]

Eh maybe the base model mini is only 3K but of course to get it up and running costs a lot more

Figure about $8000 (we did) for a conservative but optimally configured Umini 4.6...depending on if you have power already
$5k for the camera, $1500 for the BMEVF, $500 for the shoulder plate setup, $1k minimum for memory/V-mount power.

Based on the feedback we've got from a couple of the people who have used the camera and peripherals...people who are very familiar with BM cameras - this will more of a camera than the FS7 and way beyond an A7RII.

The fact that they consider the look as a considerable step above the best BM image currently, in this kind of package, it looks like it will be more of a league of it's own kind of creative tool.

"this will more of a camera than the FS7"

?.....I have trouble going with that statement.....until we see the production version and can confirm or deny there is no "Black Sun" or "Purple Sun" or other issues, it's hard to say it's more of a camera than the FS7....and don't get me wrong, I'm hoping there is no issues and this camera will be a success.....

They have already stated that the black sun issue has been fixed.

This is only an issue in your mind.

If people have the right to complain on here then I have the right to point out that complaining is kind of silly.
Why does something have to affect someone's life in some serious way for them to chime in. This is a camera/video/film forum....people talk about cameras. That includes good/bad/positive/negative. No one ever said delays were a life altering event, but if a camera company(which is what often gets discussed here) does negative things, expect negative feedback. Pretty simple.

Well put! Pulpfiction007

Isn't the ursa like half the price of the FS7 though? And even if we do these issues wont they be fixed? (though who knows how long it will take) I havent kept much up to date on any of the black magic cameras because the URSA is the only one that interests me (ergonomics) and its a bit out of my budget but still its like half the price of the fs7 if I am correct?

There's the URSA and the URSA Mini. Prices vary depending on mount and resolution (4K vs. 4.6K)...check out B&H.

I'm guessing you're an unhappy owner? As alohype said above, when you jump in with a company that has never built cameras before, you're expectations have to be realistic. From the start I expected it to be a couple of years at least before they figured out their workflow and refined their manufacturing to work out the kinks. And that's exactly why I didn't buy early.

That being said, I think black magic is really pushing to make their customers happy. They're one of the only companies out there trying to give shooters exactly what they want: Pro features in an affordable body. I can respect that

BM cameras have no OLPF. This causes skin texture problems, as the equivalent of crude, heavy handed sharpening is baked into every single frame. Not really professional, as not many pros want to make their talent's skin look worse than it is. You can get a 3rd party OLPF, but this makes your bokeh all smeary like an old 35mm adapter.

The A7RII absolutely does not compete with the URSA. FS7 - definitely.
A7RII has an oversampled 4K, much like F65, albeit with fewer "over" pixels. FS-7 doesn't, making, at the very worst, the situation where A7RII beats FS7 on resolution and, off what I have seen, it may be superior in color science as well. FS7 has superior codec/bitrate but one can run HDMI out to an external recorder (which are coming down in price as well) and record in ProRes. Plus, the auto focus on A7RII (with native E-mount AF lenses) is far superior as well.

Do you sell them Jim?

FS7 has better DR, about 1.5 stops if you go by Sony's white papers (slog3 vs slog2). URSA mini should have even more, if you believe BM's claims.

HUH? BMD gets a lot of stuff wrong but there skin tones/ textures is not one of them.

Yeah I had to laugh when I read this (imo wrong) opinion presented as an obvious fact. Clearly no professional would choose the BMCC as an A camera, right?

I mean if you want to knock the moire I get it, BUT THE SKIN TONES? That is largely be lauded as some of the best south of Alexa?

he wrote SKIN TEXTURE and I mainly agree with him btw...

skin tones are absolutely GREAT but texture can be harsh at times...nothing that a nice diffusion filter can't cure...

I addressed the skin tone/texture in that first post but I don't agree with what he said about the texture but that is a matter of taste. But to say professionals wouldn't use them is flat out wrong.

Right, and the hyperbolic way the opinion was presented, if someone had never heard of these cameras and just read that, they'd think they looked awful (and that no real pro would deign to use one).

Ive heard more than a few cinematographers say they soften Alexa footage in post or use diffusion not just to bloom highlights but because the footage is too sharp. The BMCC is similar in that way.
