Blackmagic press conference

Be interesting. Based on the email teaser, it appears to be focused on Live Event Production like Switchers, Teranex and Multi-View Broadcast Monitors. We'll see. It begins and noon Pacific Time, 3:00 pm Eastern (NA), 7:00 am Sydney and 8:00 pm GMT / London time.

Fanless swtichers would be a good thing.
 
Doesn't sound like this side of the business, but just in case: I want a Pocket Cinema Camera with the 4.6k sensor. Thicker and bigger, if it needs to be, but still with a m43 mount. A Micro Cinema Camera with the 4.6k sensor and m43 mount would work too.
 
They announce a new URSA wich should ship in september 2017 but eventually will ship without any notice march 2019 :)
No I asume they won't do that again.
 
Trying to recall if Sony or Panasonic or Ikegami ever had a live stream of a press conference for their broadcast products...

This is to coincide with the WPPI convention that starts in Vegas tomorrow. Likely gear well suited for the wedding or live event market. Seems odd to announce broadcast gear this close to NAB and likely will not be everything cool they are working on. I expect they are holding the really cool stuff for NAB which is only a few months away.
 
Insofar as the NAB announcements go - generally, companies don't want to compete for the attention spans, thereby scattering the announcements over the preceding 3-4 weeks.

Supposedly, there'll be a slew of new cameras at the NAB but it's still two and a half months away. Rumors (and innuendos) generally pick up steam by mid-March.
 
I did live video streaming for many years and this presentation is horrendous quality. How embarrassing. The audio is driving me more insane than the faded video. I am skipping and waiting for the summary later on.

Grant has done some amazing thing with BMD but he is not the most articulate person to put on camera in these situations.

#3 - Blackmagic Web Presenter - $495

#4 - Blackmagic Studio Camera 2 (same HD and 4K cameras, but without an internal battery for shipping reasons) - $1495 and $1695, respectively.

Watched it as well. Did the facepalm when the picture came up. I think someone is going to be in hot water after the broadcast.

The audio has never been great on these announcements but it is good for the viewer. You can tell clear well, which of the products has those ridiculously loud muffin fans in them. The TV studio switcher was reasonably quiet and it does 1080 progressive which is a big step forward from switchers of the past that spit out interlaced only.

In all I think the products are pretty good if you do live broadcast and live web streaming. I don't think the TV studio unit does keying, it does DVE. They saved the keying for their more expensive units. I suspect we will see updates to those in early April.

If the real world reviews come back good I will most certainly be picking up a Web Presenter unit, at the very least.

You noticed that he DID NOT show the new Studio Cameras. Some old habits die hard!

Pretty sure the new ATEM TV Studio HD has keying support, since the old ATEM TV Studio model it is replacing had it.

From the product page:

"ATEM Television Studio HD includes an upstream keyer with full chroma keying for green screen and blue screen shots ... The upstream keyer works with chroma, patterns, shapes, and linear keys. You also get 2 downstream keyers for adding graphics, logos and bugs to your video."

Basically it seems to be an upgrade over the original ATEM TV Studio that adds:

  • 2 additional inputs (8 total, up from 6 on original model)
  • 1080p support, up to 60 fps (previous only did 1080i)
  • DVE
  • Front panel buttons and screen
  • Analog XLR audio input (vs. AES digital audio on original)
  • Configurable Aux SDI output
  • Headset connectors + 4x talkback SDI output (this is for talkback support if using the BM Studio Cameras)
  • No on board H.264 encoder (this is a removal from the original)

All in all a pretty solid update. The ATEM TV Studio hadn't been updated since its initial release in 2011 (the ATEM 1 M/E and 2 M/E both saw updates since then which added 4K support).
 
Hoping they will implement some of the improvements here into future models of the 4K lineup. The 1M/E 4Ks work great for us, but more affordable hardware control options would be a much welcome addition. Would love to see a new 1M/E control panel closer to $2,500 than the current $5,000, and a hardware CCU option. Skaarhoj and J/L Cooper have products that fill these gaps, but an 'official' Blackmagic solution would be preferable.

Also, the Studio Camera lineup, in my opinion, could use some work. The 4K sensor offered on the Studio Camera and Micro Studio Camera is quite inferior to the HD sensor option, but you cannot buy a Micro Studio Camera with an HD sensor. Also, you can't adjust the screen on the Studio Cameras, so anytime we have to have the camera higher up on a tripod it is a pain for the operators. BMD does offer accessories for the URSA Mini that address these problems, but the cost is 3-4 times more, which is pushing us towards other solutions from Sony and others despite that we prefer the image from the Studio Camera HD.

Uggg... Glad I missed it.

I was actually getting our stream encoder tested for this semester of streaming our news classes... I would quit if it looked that bad. Anyone know if it was recorded and available on the web?

Hey Mr. Petty, maybe consider hiring me for the next one? I have a bunch of stuff on Youtube that came out of our studio, even the 720x480 16:9 scaled up to 1280x720 looks pretty good and should have been better if I had a Terranex to send it through. Had to scale it because our encoder couldn't handle the 16:9 standard def. signal correctly. There are always things to get around the problems.
 
Glad to see the TV Studio get an update. It badly needed more input formats and good to see that those are implemented. However, 1080 23.98PsF is not listed and that's a shame, considering that's what a number of cameras output (Sony in particular).
