Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

I think I'm in love. The uncompressed beautiful detail as it gently rolls off into the background is the clincher. Please have decent frame rates and a histogram. That sensor looks better than all the other dslrs out there, and maybe even the Red without HDRx. Highlights are almost indistinguishable from film. That's all I ever wanted. I think I'm getting misty eyed.

Does this mean that we still need to learn to light ...again.
:violin:
The Beach dusk video shows that the range is there . When I said I need the fs 700 today I meant to say I need the BMCC today....honest .

The enthusiasm for this camera is similar to the enthusiasm the original concept of the Scarlet had.

I think that at the price point of around $3000, we (And by we I mean I) no longer care about modularity, because interchangeable lenses are modular and the part of the camera system that is more for long-term use. If you "upgrade" by buying a new camera body, then in essence the camera body is the "brain", but it is also a functioning backup camera if you don't sell it!

Additionally, as technology keeps moving, you should theoretically be getting closer and closer to using what the pros use.

Of course the modularity is not perfect because of sensor sizes and lens mounts, but at $3,000 for a cinema camera, nothings' perfect!

I probably won't buy it in the first run simply because I should probably buy a corporate video camera next, but I will sure keep an eye on this.... - wait this camera has no name does it?!

For those interested in anamorphic for this camera there are obviously aspects such as lens flare that cannot be replicated, however:

One of the main points of anamorphic shooting is to utilise the full area of the film or sensor so to not throw away resolution. To crop a 1080p file to 2.39:1 you would only be using 803 vertical lines and throwing away 277. But with this sensor you have 1366 lines to start with, so to crop to 2.39:1 you are using 1017 lines. Plenty to downscale to 803. So for this aspect, I would say anamorphic is not needed for this camera.

Welcome to DVXuser!

Good points on the anamorphic. Though from my understanding this is a native 4:3 sensor, so if the internals can handle it and BM enables it, might be nice to have the extra resoltution and use anamorphic lenses anyway. At least having that option would be a nice bonus. :)

im not sure but i think its a CCD sensor... i can see some blooming in Beach Dusk video... a the beginning in car headlights ....
not just that ...colors and organic look... characteristics of the CCD sensor...

So how does this compare to that Bolex? I read those blurbs, but didnt get too excited.
For old 16mm I vote - Arri -- with pin registration., Bolex 16 ? eh, not so much

One thing that has me puzzled is John Brawleys comments that the white balance is baked into the raw file.
Surely this is a mistake?
As I have been led to understand raw files have always had the advantage of being white balance neutral, so you can just choose the colour temperature in post.
Because this camera can also shoot non raw it will obviously have a white balance setting in camera. But surely this will have no affect on the raw data.

Can anyone confirm or refute this thinking?

Often, when cameras shoot RAW, they record the whitebalance point set in the camera as metadata for monitoring purposes later. But let's see what Mr. Brawley actually says:
"Then of course, you can choose RAW. RAW simply means you get everything the camera produces. The only thing that’s baked into this file is the white balance point. Everything else is up for grabs. There is no reducing image resolution or colour compression. You get all that information and you can choose how you want it to look with the greatest range and flexibility."

Reading this, it does sound like the whitebalance could be actually baked in. Maybe not - but certainly possible based on his words alone. I would love to hear a little bit more about this...

I've seen blooming in CMOS sensors as well. It looks more like chromatic aberration to me.

Holy crap, Every time I step away this thread gets 10 pages longer. Love the look of the camera with the sun shade on, studio monitor with a lens on the front. Don't have a problem with chip size, bigger than super16 is plenty cinematic to me. This is a 4/3 class camera in the broadcast sense of chip sizing, although smaller than panasonic's implementation. So it should be double the dimensions of broadcast 2/3, pretty close anyway. Don't forget we've seen really nice stuff shot with 2/3 cameras.

Re lens mount, how is it possible to be compatible with both canon and nikon out of the box? How does that work?

Need to start saving my pennies. No doubt the first batch will sell out fast, and development will just keep moving along. Exciting times.

I have to say, for $3k that seems to be an amazing camera. I too watched the videos and I think they show a lot about what the camera can do. The DR is fantastic, and the highlight to clipping handling looks like what I would want in a camera.

Pertaining to the rolling shutter, I didn't see any issues that popped out to me. Not that anything pushed the sensor hard enough to know, but given it is a smaller sensor I would expect the light sensitivity to be less than a regular APS-C sized or similar but the rolling shutter to be a bit faster.

This is a huge win/win for people. Bravo to BM for really putting out a neat camera.

"The specs are wonderful, and I'm sure it can produce wonderful images, but the ones posted are not a good example of that."

I don't know what you're talking about. The images reveal the benefit of uncompressed and the detail we are sorely missing in a lot of the other prosumer cameras. This camera blows away everything under $10K, and maybe even above. The only drawback seems to be framerates. The dynamic range on that sensor is all I need to see. Highlights looked better than some Epic and Alexa footage I've seen, and certainly better than the stuff in this price range. Again, I don't know what you're talking about. Give me uncompressed 13.5 stops, and end the madness.

A question to those at NAB who can ask:

Is BlackMagic looking at this as the beginning of a line of cameras?

I see a lot potential at higher pricepoints.

Wow... awesome to see this. Not useful for the surfing stuff I shoot (no 50p) but I could see myself shooting everything else with these. For weddings it might even make life a little easier thanks to the smaller sensor size, makng focusing easier. And best of all it will slip right into most people's current DSLR setup, with the only addition being a really fast, wide lens.

One question regarding PL mount s16mm lenses - If the image if 2.5k, and you're delivering in 1080p, will that give you enough room to use s16mm lenses and the vignetting in post?

Also if I'm not mistaken, the Canon EF mount should be able to accept PL mount adaptors, becaue there is no mirror. the PL mount lenses will set inside the camera body but this is not a problem as there is nothing mechanical there to cause trouble like on the DSLR's. I could be wrong about this though, I'm certainly no expert on PL mount lenses.

Just saying, I love how short and sweet these guys are handing it to everyone. No fluff, just STUFF.

This is your third or fourth post here letting us know your position on the camera, noone responded to your other posts to warrant more of the same. As of right now, you aren't adding anything valuable to the conversation or asking any relevant questions. This is how perfectly fine threads like these go south.

You've said your piece, either you're interested and you're asking questions, trying to figure out the camera (even in speculation phase) or you're not and you're moving on?

Well it is true that I don't post anywhere on this forum to get your response on anything (or anyone elses for that matter, I'm not baiting anyone). I also think any product announcement deserves some critical thought as opposed to some sort of mass hysteria.

So it sounds as though you are now the judge of what might be a valuable addition to any conversation or even what might be relevant, which, if I may be excused, seems a little high handed.

I'm not going to stop being critical about anything, I certainly haven't made up any information. I guess as a mod you can ban me, but that seems a little silly, I didn't think that was the way they rolled in this forum.
