Black Magic PocketHD and 4K production camera

OK, I thought you were saying that the Pocket Camera's image is soft when compared to the 50Mbps recording on a GH3. Which is why I questioned your statement.

From what I understand, the camera will take 64GB cards that are currently just over $70 a pop. Yes, less recording time but with ProRes (HQ) at 220 Mbps I'm expecting the camera to return very decent footage.

Very decent footage indeed.

Having shot a lot of 16mm film, I do expect some here sill be surprised how soft a lot of older 16mm glass is. Buy with caution and test if you can.

I went with the Sony FS700 last year, and still curious about the 4k capability that's supposed to be coming for it. I wonder if these Black Magic cameras will be any cause for Sony to offer the eventual 4k for the FS700 at a greatly reduced price? I say make it free! (one can hope!)

LOL! BMD says "Shipping late July". All I can think of is "fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...."

They could be the kind of company that doesn't tell us anything until the product is ready to ship but where the heck is the fun in that? Even the GH3 has been hard to get in the hands of many who want it. Apple had issues with the iMac and I'm sure they have other production issues we are actually not aware of. I now work in the marketing department at a manufacturing company and I can tell you if we don't have all our ducks in a row we just don't say anything to any of our customers until it is ready to launch and we know production can keep up.

This is the downside to a company trying to be a bit transparent to its customers. They say things a little too early too much and it comes back in their face when they cannot deliver. The alternative could be no heads up at all and then just drop it on everybody that a camera is ready to purchase. Some may prefer that since there isn't the anticipation and agony of waiting but I for one like the adventurous spirit of BMD even if they do miss their target on almost every product. I use a lot of their editing gear and almost every product has been delayed by a month or two. Yeah that isn't a great thing but in the end they always comes through and once the products launch they are usually pretty steady.

two things to take into account:
* the pocket BMC has a 2.9x crop factor; on this sensor, the Voigtlander 17.5mm f/0.95 becomes equivalent to a 50mm f/2.8 on full frame, in terms of FoV and DoF; somebody will have to test how bad the distortion is, but the samyang 8mm fisheye may be the only cheap option for a wide angle on the pocket BMC
* the production BMC does not record RAW initially; and when it does, the bitrate will be astronomical, even compressed (18 minutes of footage on a 240GB SSD)

I still think it's an amazing and revolutionary announcement, but just to put things into perspective...

Throw the speed booster on the Pocket, Metabones is releasing the MFT version this month.

Right, then you have a 1.9x crop body with an EF mount. If they make the m43-to-canon speedbooster fully electronic, and if infinite focus issues don't arise, you can use the 11-16 as a 21-30 equivalent FF.

Some info on battery life- The Pocket cinema cam is powered by a Nikon EL-EN20 battery. The down side is that battery life is just an hour, the upside is that the EL-EN20 is about $18, so 6 hours of battery life will only cost $90 with included battery + 5 spares.

I don't know if they'd do this, but I hope they make a Micro 4/3rds mount for the Super 35mm 4K camera. The lenses won't cover the sensor, but it would be great for the Speedbooster to make it near full frame and one stop more sensitive. It will become an even bigger beast then.

Claiming 4K and recording to a 4K medium aand resolving 4K are all different things, plus neither you nor I have seen what this thing records. WHat do we really know about image quality?

Might want to read through the rest of the thread. Much has happened since I started it..
