Black Magic PocketHD and 4K production camera

I suspect CVP are trying to score all the web traffic... be the first, people will return. I doubt we'll see this camera in 2013, so why be able to pre-order it already?

The way I understand it, these pics of the banners were leaked. BM hasn't officially announced them, and there are no pics of their NAB full display.
You guys at NAB should be able to handle actual cameras, don't you think?

I almost wet myself this morning when I saw this.

I think production will be much better this time around. BM had some growing pains to deal with since this was a new direction for them. To me it seems like most of the concepts in both these new cameras are just slightl mods from their existing designs. This means there should not be as many kinks in production this time.

If this pocket camera delivers I think a lot of DSLR's are in trouble. May not be a perfect replacement and could be softer but still some will prefer that. Can't be much softer than Canon anyway even if the sensor is native 1080p.

If this thing really does have an active M4/3 mount I see no reason for somebody not to own a GH3 and this pocket camera. Buy the lenses and use the best body for the job. Sure Prores is better but sometimes you don't need it and 50mbits will be fine. I doubt it will shoot stills as well so my hope is to still keep my GH2 and maybe even bypass upgrading to the GH3 and just getting this pocket cam. Use the pocket cam when I need it and use my GH2 for stills and vacation type video or just messing around.

Finally is it really fare to criticize BM for production when a lot of people couldn't get their hands on a GH3 either for a couple of months. It is still hard to find them in stock at decent places for longer than a day.

Oh bloody hell..... What happens to my mark3 now??? :Drogar-KnockedOut(D

Same thing that happened to my beloved 5Dmk3 - it just technically became obsolete for video. But at least you still have a kick-ass stills camera that does nice video!

Now, if I'd just recently bought an Epic; man I'd be sweating bullets this morning....

I don't really think that the BMC and the RED Epic are competing for the same market. The BMC cameras look great, from the little information that we have, but they are not going to be front line large production cameras. The RED Epic is.

I placed a pre-order for the 4k with CVP today (it can be cancelled). If it comes out this year, it would save me having to rent a higher end camera (and be cheaper, too).

Think I'll keep my mk3 for a bit...At least for another 2 years or so when I upgrade.

Maybe then we'll have 4k for 2k, eh? :D

Maybe not. Yeah, the Epic has it place in big productions worldwide, so they have nothing to prove in that department. But I was talking more from the point of view of smaller owner-operator outfits who maybe do a bit of rental and that sort of thing. The investment will look harsh, when compared to the BM price.

This camera and the RED Epic are not really competing - though this new camera could hurt Scarlet and 1DC sales a bit. For me, and several others I know, we have been looking at either the Scarlet or the 1DC as upgrades over the next 12 months but both were a bit of a stretch - by the time you kit them out you are looking at 15k minimum.

This new camera is much more attractive, and could make the 1DC almost irrelevant. The Scarlet will still have a market as a 2nd camera to the Epic and for it's PL option, as well as for it's name ("I own and shoot on a RED, hire me!"), but certainly most independent guys will be more interested in this new camera.

That camera has a very special, very niche place in the market. Even if RED dropped the price of an Epic to $1000, the 1-DC would be untouched, in it's niche. Go see the video of it flying about on a dronecopter, shooting 4K and you'll get the idea.

$Twelve Grand is a pretty tough niche, IMO.

Just before I start reading all the thread, an important piece of info that may not have been posted yet:

Which sensor are they using it on the 4K camera? How is the DR?

If it is the Cmosis CMV12000 (which is S35, 4K, global shutter, and costs $1K more than the one in the original BMC), it has 10 stops of DR natively, 15 if you go for the HDR mode (which has the same kind of motion artifacts of HDRx, but not the same workflow issues) if you go by their numbers, or 8 and 13 according to my measures with that sensor.
