C100: Black Balance

Hey all,

How often is everyone doing a Black Balance while in the feild on their c100/300?

Cheers,

Phil

If for some reason I run 20,000 ISO I will black balance. I was playing with that ISO on a shoot and got a dead pixel on the camera. Black Balance gets rid of it. Anytime I run really high ISO's after a shoot I'll black balance.

You mean I'm supposed to remove the lens, put on the body cap and do a black balance every time I change ISO? Sounds like a fast track to a dirty sensor to me.

No doubt Erik but the same manual that instructs us to black balance after each ISO change also instructs us to "Attach the body cap to the lens mount" (page 43). What it says on page 43 is "Adjusting the black balance may be necessary in the following cases...After changing the ISO speed/gain settings." I guess the operative word is "may". ;)

I covered the lens and black balanced. Seemed to work fine.

Maybe a little test can be done to see if there is a difference between the lens cap and body cap? There maybe be other factors involved like
possible light leak for lens or the electronic contacts on the body which may result in a different outcome in the balancing. I do hope the lens blocking works as it would be a pain to put on the body cap every time I changed Iso's. haha

Glad the hear. That's what I've been doing, and seemingly to good effect. Seems to make a world of difference, and thus worth the 40 sec to do frequently. Our C100 is working many, many hours a day these days, so far never missing a beat.

hence one of my gripes i wish they would add in the next firmware: the ability to map BB to one of the buttons

You can at least put it in the favorites menu or My Menu or whatever they call it. That's what I did. Much easier than fishing around for it, but not as nice as having a button.

What "world of difference" are you noticing? I have noticed a big reduction in noise after black balance, but have only black balanced occasionally.

It's not the regular menu button assignment.

Heading to NYC and Brooklyn tomorrow for a shoot. If I don't run into you there , I'll look it up when I get back (it's some convoluted process I can't remember...)

I've got some other not-main-menu assignments like TC (preset/reset), shutter degree/fractions (for when I go to 1/125 60i for slo mo), and delete last clip (my fave!).

For what it's worth, I'm black balancing each morning and if I do an ISO change or there is a large temp change. Does *seem* to help with shadow noise.

with my C100 I do just like when I'm first AC working with a red Epic : black balance without lens, with sensor cap & a black cloth over the camera.

I do this before each project, especially when the conditions change a lot (freezing night over sunny day).

when I'm on a feature or long term project I black balance every week or two.
