Birger Mount

The Internet age has done weird, weird things to our perception of the passing of time. The F3 may seem like it was announced a year before shipping, but in reality it was only three months. Rumor sites were claiming there would be an AF200 at NAB -- just four months after the AF100 shipped! It's crazy how compressed our sense of time has become.

On the other hand, the Scarlet is now going on almost 3.5 years and counting. Scarlet was announced before the first DSLR with video! The entire DSLR revolution came (and, I would argue, went) without the Scarlet ever appearing. It's amazing to think that it's been that long, whereas the AF100 has barely been out six months but it feels like it's been out much longer...

This thread started nine months ago and it feels like a life time Barry:( looking forward to a new postive twist on the release;) when ever that will be

Near as I can tell, the official F3 announcement was November 7, 2010. About three months before shipping.

But didn't they announce that they would be making an s35 chip camera almost a year before release? They didn't announce the full specs or even that it would be called an F3 but we knew they were going to release their first "affordable" S35 camera for a year no?

Forgive me if this has already been covered, I just did a search and can't find the answer. Watched Philip Bloom's video, and noticed he only opened and closed the iris with the (soon to be) wireless follow focus. Will I need to be messing with that thing every time I stop down or up, or will I be able to do it on camera?

Philip, can you clarify the overall product idea? Does it fully adapt the EF lenses to M43 systems in that M43 bodies can controll/read the lens including EXIF information? Or does it only control the lens? Will this product pass enough power to the lens to enable image stabilization? Does it pass power from the M43 body or needs external power (via a cable)?

hi

the unit I had, and this is preproduction does not pass any info to the camera, there are no electronics on the M43 end. It's all powered by the Sony battery...

Thanks. Did you try/know about the image stabilization in EF lenses? Will it work with the Birger? And, most importantly, is there any way to glance and know the current aperture with the Birger? Or do you need to count (and remember) the steps pressed and then correlate with each specific EF lens?

A video look at the birger mount on the AF101... http://philipbloom.net/2011/07/13/birger/

looks good!

While I can appreciate the engineering that went into building this product, not sure about the implementation. Changing the aperture, in steps? Don't think that's gonna fly with this crowd. And, the focus looks like it changes in steps, too. As he racks focus over the numbered wheel, doesn't it look "steppy?" Or, is this a web video problem?

I don't think I could shoot a documentary with this setup.

I'm not sure what the point is of having someone review a pre-production model of something, particularly without any information about how the production model will be improved (or when it will be in stores). All the signs are pointing to longer delays and poor implementation. I'm not holding my breath on this one.
