BEWARE: Scammer Joe Dono is back

Interesting, I had an offer for my HVX that's for sale here from a new member with zero post wanting me to fed X it out to him today.

I sent him 3 or 4 corespondents with no return.

Same thing here, selling an HMC150 and someone expressed interest, said he was in NY and I asked for some credentials or even Ebay feedback, something! never got back to me. Oh yeah, and he had 0 feedback which made me a little suspicious but since we were both in NY I was going to suggest a face to face, cash. o well.

im texting him back and forth right now. Basically just asking him about all his prior incidents. its so funny hes getting so mad.

It's not always the best idea to show everything in your hand. You're broadcasting on a public worldwide forum here. Work behind the scenes if you want to get Dono out of the scam business.

here is his new email and facbeook

this is new email

jtpllc@gmail.com

here is his facebook with his fiance

can no longer view facebook now that he has it on private

If he is truly using false credit card numbers and such, that constitutes Fraud & identity theft, which should be a case with any law enforcement agency in the country. Doing it over state lines also steps up the charges. Someone who has gotten scammed before needs to collect and compound a laundry list of evidence and go talk to a detective at your local police station or DA's office, or maybe even stepping it up and talking to someone at your local FBI Field Office. Maybe even US Marshalls, since it's going across state lines?

I'll say it again. Stop showing your cards. You want to get Dono or your stuff back? start making phone calls and stop letting him know you're on to him.

Without a SSN and background check it is useless, what makes you think someone can't make their name Ted Simmons when it's really Joe Scammer?

Point taken. But in response, if you are required to come up with a real name and an email attached to it plus a photo of yourself, then if that person, name photo and email was to commit any crimes under that alias is that not a more severe crime with more severe penalties? Just puttin it out there. There are all kinds of things that could be put into place to prevent this but that would entail heading into a BIG BROTHER type of forum, and we don't want that do we.:Drogar-SunGlass(DBG

What makes you think I couldn't get a screen name under Ted Simmons, open an email TedSimmons@gmail.com and put a random pick of some other guy to it???

Come on man, that's not going to protect anyone but give a false sense of security.

You guys that were scammed how did your transaction take place? Was it via pay pal?

Make the picture something obscure. "I need a picture of you holding three spoons and a newspaper." Something that's not worth photoshopping.

So, I can go shoot a pic of some guy holding 3 spoons and a newspaper and say it's me. Are you following here??? Stay away from ideas that give a false sense of security.

Over at DVinfo they don't even let you see the marketplace until you have been a member for 3 months.

I know it's dangerous to give a false sense of security but if you can make it a pain in the ass for scammers it's just as easy for scammers to move to another easier target.

Word. I thought DVInfo also has a minimum post count to see the classifieds as well. That may go a long way if you need to have posted 25+ or 50+ times, most scammers will never want to go through all of that. But then again, it's not foolproof.

I always thought Fred Miranda had an alright system -- no free e-mails allowed (gmail, hotmail, etc.) Kind of weeds out a lot of the fly-by-night scammers

newbie chiming in.

i had been reading, studying and learning on this forum for several months before i finally signed on; i finally signed on because i finally felt some confidence to make some purchases on USED professional grade equipment. as a newbie to this forum, and to film making, buying reliable, quality used equipment from professionals (who in most cases have taken good care of their stuff) is essential.

dvinfo does newbies much less service by demanding that 3 month "probationary" period. 3 months to buy used equipment? really!? much of the goods for sale on these forums have planned obsolescence. how many of you veterans are in the market for anything dvx related? or even newer yet to the market, hmc or perhaps even the hvx200? a lot of these used, older products are being thoughtfully purchased by rookies — and it is us rookies some want to arbitrarily bar from the marketplace.

ok. just my $.02 worth

So I checked and it's actually a 60 day probationary period from when you're approved. But that's exactly the idea, many scammers are looking for a quick fix and will move around a lot. Having that grace period, in theory, will hopefully slow scammers because it's not something they can do quickly. I definitely see DVInfo as a more "mature" site and everything is kept on a VERY tight leash. I've been a member there for a few years as well as over here, and I have had nothing but great experiences with selling things on both sites. There is plenty of gear here, as well as Ebay and other used sites if you plan to purchase used equipment. Buying from a reputable member will typically render good results. There's hiccups every now and again, but in the end it all usually gets sorted out.

But another thing you have to understand is that this site nor DVInfo is for informational purposes and to connect and share with other members of the video community. Neither is by any means a used gear site, classifieds are simply added for the convenience of it's members.

And as for products being obsolete, once you have been established over there for 60 days, you can buy and sell instantly. At 60 days, you're still a newbie:laugh:. And besides, this is usually a much better place anyways because there is probably 10 to 20 times more gear listed and sold here everyday than DVInfo.

Yea, Looking at all sides I think eBay is prob the safest way to sell, you can protect yourself there to some extent, make your auctions so only pay pal verified people can bid with a certain rating etc.

I do have to say everyone here on this forum that has bought what little used stuff I have sold has been a class act, honest and a pleasure to deal with.

I'd bet if the forums got rid of the marketplace very few would get scammed because they would have to sell on eBay that will save you for fraud protection if you know what your doing.

If you want to do the research and if you know for sure that he is associated with that web address "stoney creek pictures" you can contact domainsbyproxy.com. Request information on the registrant. There are several postings on the web by registrants of domains on this service. They are pissed because every time there is a request for information they get charged a fee so they will charge him $20.00 US if you request. I have read in a couple of groups that though these requests are supposed to be for legal reason or "legal requests" domainsbyproxy.com rarely cares and just hits the registrants credit card for the twenty bucks and give you the information you are looking for.
If you know FOR SURE that this is him then I am sure a few hundred requests might come in from friends of yours who are interested in supporting his demise.
Bats will just get you in jail, brains will beat the sh_t out of him eventually he is not smart but he is persistent it appears.
