The 11-16 is a great lens, but it also depends on what you are planning to shoot. It has mild barrel distortion but severe distortion in objects on the edges of the frame such as human heads. It you plan to shoot architecture or landscapes it will be great.

Another option is the slower Tokina 12-24mm f4. It has a wider range and still fixed aperture.

It also seems to work well on a FF camera as wide as 19mm.

The samyang 14mm though is not as good as the tokina. Less light gets through (it's 2.8 but for fullframe and there is almost no difference in exposure when you change to 3.5 on the samyang) and distorts.
The tokina is almost perfect.

yes, it's about its max aperture.
tokina 11-16 is faster and can stay at f2.8 all the time.
that said, there is really nothing wrong or right if one chooses to shoot with canon 10-22, which is a sharp & low distort lens. Consider them just as tools, different but similar.
I think more stills photographers prefer the 10-22 over the Tokina unless maximum aperture (or cost) is a priority, so if you plan to use it for stills, Canon may be the better choice.
Major disclaimer: I haven't used either lens myself. Only what I've read elsewhere...

that is USED to be before Tokina 11-16 release. f/28 all the way. Nothing can beat that. Also, the cost between 10-22 vs 11-16 is not that much. Very close.
