Rick, tell me you're still going to watch Tom Horn...:)
I like Tom Horn, Blaine...just can't get it anywhere near the top 20 Westerns. Funny...now that I think about it, this genre is probably one of the most consistent of all. There aren't many flat out bad Westerns (on the same level of **** produced in other genres.)

...putting it in now...ttyl....gotta few other to watch...(callaghan...went to 2 places, couldn't find Bandolero but I'll keep searching)...

Blaine, I'll let you know about Tom Horn...

PS This stew is so good the chunks of meat are as tender as butter...

Yeah, okay, I'll agree with the films y'all have listed (the ones I've seen, anyway...and it seems I've seen most of the "normal" ones), but...

Of course there's a but...

Iffen I'm sitting around and suddenly feel like I wanna watch a Western, I'm probably not gonna pop in any of the "good" ones.

Chances are, I'll watch Five Card Stud, one of the Support. . . films, or Don Knott's contribution.

:) Thye're just...fun.

I just wanted you to know that I had a great time watching Westerns and Eating stew this past Saturday.

Blaine, I just wanted you to know I watched Tom Horn and while I thought it was a great flick. There were a few faults I'd like to comment on real quick though...

For starters, it seemed very low budget. But to me, along with Steve McQueens understated acting, this was not a hinderance at all. Some of the performances could have stepped up a bit. For a name brand movie with name brand starts...Steve McQueen, Linda Evans, Slim Pickens, etc...I would have expected more from the supporting cast. I mean, many of them were downright awful and pulled me out of the story.

And, some of the cinematography seemed a bit like a made for tv film and not like a big and bold cinematic experience.

Aside from that though, I loved it and the entire mood of the film. Kind of desolate. Kind of lonely. Kind of like he was. Even when they all gathered for that big lobster feast, it seemed as though this was a regular occurence but Steve McQueens character was always the fish out of water. I just dug that vibe. He was cool, through and through.

I also dug the story. I know its based on truth but it really appreciated the fact that they didn't seem to blow too much out of proportion. It was just a solid story that didnt try to much.

And I really didnt see that ending coming. I thought itd end up going another way and I am glad they weren't too graphic about it. All in all, if I catch the flick again on the tube, I'll be sure to sit and watch a while...

I haven't seen "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" in ages. So, I thought I'd rent it off my newly formed Blockbuster Online account. I watched it yesterday and I gotta say its way better than I remembered. I knew it was good but this trascended my memories of it. I just might have to move this from my honorable mention list to the 10 ten lists. What a great story, western, acting, direction, etc.

In fact, John Hudson, this one would be a great one to get reaquainted to the genre with. Though I absolutely love Westerns that are in love with their setting, (the Searchers, the Leone flicks) I love this one for getting to the story. There aren't a lot of beautiful landscape shots. Its just good ol plain story telling about a story that just happened to have happened in the west. Wayne is great in this...1961....who cares. This movie doesnt drag at all...

Oh man. Lee Marvin and John Wayne...I know it isn't a western but you gotta love 'em in Donovan's Reef!!!! (especially if you've spent any time on Kaui'i)

They were definitely great in that too but, for me, Valance is a classic...any one playing villains (including me) should watch Marvin in this film...45 years ago and holds up as one of the most despicable, well crafted, enjoyable characters to be brought to the screen...

I just watched THE PROFESSIONALS yesterday. http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0060862/ Man, its another excellent flick. I can't believe I never saw it before. Ever since this thread, I have been on a western renting spree...But, if I've never watched it before, I will go with opinions from here or the ranking from IMDB. IMDB has never let me down. If the ranking is above 7 points, its gonna be good.

Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Jack Palance, etc. I thought I was going to miss John Wayne or Clint Eastwood. Nope. This movie is great storytelling too...

You forgot to mention Claudia Cardinale! :love4:

Holy that is so funny. I was going to mention her because she was SO fricken beautiful and felt she deserved the nod. But, I didn't know her name and was too lazy to look her up...but you are right...one of the hottest Western babes ever!
