Best settings for Snowboarding

thanks for sharing! your footage looks awesome. I guess the motion blur thing is more about your own taste. I agree with you in that shooting with a high shutter looks great, especially on slow mo playback.

you don't want to go any higher than 120 shutter for slow-mo when shooting 720p. it's just the rule.

Says who? I'm almost always doing it and it looks great. General filming rules don't always apply for this kind of stuff.

Car3o's right, don't listen to him. Or anyone else.

Get the camera, hit the slopes, run some tests, and decide for yourself what looks best to you.

Whoa whoa whoa... you are considering mounting the GH1 to a snowboard and going down the hill? Personally I think this is the wrong camera for the job. First of all it isn't exactly light to have mounted on your board and God help us on your helmet. I made a helmet came rig for it to get some interesting shots but there is no way I would take it down a wet snowy slope like that.

no i'm not going to mount it on my helmet or board. i was just looking for something to stabilize the footage as I go down the mountain. ie cam caddie or hague mmc or monopod..

i agree with use shutter speed that looks best to you but it's always good hearing others' opinions :)

True, but opinion is just that, and you're entitled to form your own based on experience.

Example… I shot some footage last spring with the HPX-170 (60 fps at 720/24pn). It was of a college defensive end working out for pro scouts in the rain. At 1/1000 shutter you could see every individual raindrop falling.

Now, if I'd have listened to everyone's opinion…

You could try this caddy, I think a GH1 would fit ...

hey guys-
so i finally took the GH1 up on the mountain with me and wanted to share something i found quite interesting. i filmed throughout the morning of my friends snowboarding and at midday i took a look at the videos on the LCD to see how they looked. there was TONS of motion blur and MUD. it was very, very disheartening. at first i thought it was because i had the shutter speed to low, but then i remembered that because of the bright sun and snow, i had to shoot at a really high shutter in order to try and keep it properly exposed. i think i shot somewhere around 1/1000. just in case, i tried shooting again making sure i was shooting at a high enough shutter. sure enough, on playback i could see all the jello and MUD and the footage looked awful. i packed away my camera pretty disappointed and already starting to think of selling it and perhaps upgrading to something different.

however, later that night, i was viewing the videos again on the LCD and strangely enough, everything looked perfect. there wasnt any blur and the footage looked really sharp. why? my first guess is because the cold weather. does the cold weather affect playback on the LCD??? regardless, lesson learned and im still a happy GH1 owner. :)

yup, cold will make for some wacky LCD performance sometimes. that's probably all it was in your case.

Nice work..did you use any kind of handle for the follow cam shots?

I've had the chance to shoot with the GH1 on snow quite a bit over the last few weeks and it really is a pleasure to shoot with, even in flat light which is usually a real mare.
