I have a Audio Technica mic hooked XlR -3.5mm to the 7D but sound is not good. borderline horrible. I tried to fix it in sound program but still sucks.

What is the best Run & Gun type of Mic i can use to get great Audio?

Im not trying to sync it from the H4N OR any other separate device.

I just needs somethings that plugs in plays

Your problem is less the mic and more the camera. The 7D has a nasty AGC that cannot be defeated, and it's a signal killer. The only way to get decent audio shooting on a 7D is to run second-system.

The other option is to get an XLR converter box, made specifically fro DSLR cameras with AGC, from JuicedLink or Beachtek. It takes away one record channel, but that's not a s big a deal if using only one microphone.

I find that one way to minimize the horridness, is i take my rode videomic, run it to my zoom h4n, then lower my zoom h4n recording level to like 25-40 to keep levels low, then out from there to the 7D.

Not perfect, but usable in most instances where there isnt a ton of horrid back ground noise. Still not a real fix, but at least that way you have the original zoom h4n clips if you need to sync and use them for an important piece.

Really waiting on the AGC fix.

I really hope you're recording at 24-bit for that. Keeping your recording levels that low on the Zoom means that you aren't using the full resolution of the audio stream for recording. Try using those files... bring the levels up in post, add a couple of plug-ins, and see what happens to the sound. There's no signal there with which to work, and the minute you try and do something with it you're going to hear it turn to that nasty robot-like sound.
