Best lenses to start 7D with

I am about to pull the trigger on my first camera, the 7D. I am looking into a set of primes or zooms that can not only provide great image for my 7d but can be useful to me for the future with another camera. What would the best primes or zooms to do this be?

Welcome!

Tell us more about what you're going to be shooting and where. Just video? Maybe some stills now and then? Documentary or narrative? Travel videos?

Budget will have quite a bit to do with the decision you make, but personally, I started with the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 zoom lens. It's sharp at f2.8 throughout the range, and covers as wide a range of focal lengths as I use on most days. This is an EF-S only lens, so it will only work on APS-C (7D, etc.) cameras, and not the full-frame 5DII.

From a primes standpoint, if you're shooting mostly/all video, look at older Nikon manual primes with an EOS/EF adapter. A collection of 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm should about cover all of your needs, unless you're looking for more coverage at the wide end. I can't really be of much more help here, as I use all Canon EF/EF-S glass (as I lean on the photo capabilities of my HDSLRs as well).

Thanks. I am definitely looking into more of the video aspect of a lens and how it will hold up. As far as budget it is still open. I would rather spend the money on a lens that will make me happy rather than trying to go the other way. In this case you would still recommend the Canon EF-S 17-55mm?
