Best lens for shooting handheld in nightclub.

the lens would need to be a wide one for me to film handheld with a DSLR, not sure if the make matters i would keep fixed focus and move if possible.

I used my Tokina 11-16/2.8 on my 7D at a recent wedding for the dance scenes... worked quite well. I had the Manfrotto 562 video monopod as well, but you could do it handheld, just more tiring. I also found that with a monopod, I could get the camera well above the crowds for some shots.

+1 for the Tokina 11-16 2.8. I also used the Canon 10-22 2.8 which was pretty good... Also, it it very worth it to get a shoulder mount for it for handheld work.

If it were me..I would want to have somthing in the 1.8 - 1.2 range if its really dark. 2.8 may not cut it if its really dark. This way you wont have to crank up the iso and get to much noise.

I agree. 2.8 isn't fast enough. Maybe its OK for a dimly lit event, but def not a dark nightclub. I shoot with the Canon 50mm 1.8. Its good light-wise but its kinda shaky. You could try to use the shakiness to your advantage to make the event look more CRAZY if thats what you're going for.

Here's a vid I did using T2i + Canon 50 1.8:

I'm looking to get the Sigma 30mm 1.4. I've read that this is a pretty good lens. This should be even better light-wise and make the shake less noticeable.

Hi Guys
I already own the lenses you mentioned but am looking for a lens with IS or VC since it has to be handheld. 2.8 is too dark. any 1.4 wides out there with IS?

There are no lenses that are wide with IS and at that speed. Honestly it's not needed ( IS ) that is why. You do not need IS really on any lens less than 30mm, as long as you hold your shot steady and move your arms with a precise movement you will be fine. Personally I would get a hold of
(rent/buy) the Canon 24mm 1.4 as it is an amazing lens. Once you shoot with that lens at that speed you will understand. I also suggest to use a monopod as it will help stabilize your shots and then you can use it to raise your camera up in the air for some cool shots.
