Best Lens For Holding Focus?

I'm a newbie to using DSLRs for shooting (usually have used video cameras in the past).

If I like to do a lot of moving/dolly/handheld shots, I'm just wondering if there's a particular type of lens people would recommend for a 7D/60D.

I find I lose focus pretty quick using the so-so stock lens (60D) in quick situations, obviously I know this can be a drawback with the Canon DSLRs since they are photo cameras first and foremost. Again I'm a total beginner to things like choosing lens.

A wider lens has a greater DoF. A smaller f/stop i.e. f/11, f/16, etc, has also has a greater DoF. Additionally, your focus distance also affects your DoF.

For an example, a 16mm at f/11 focused at 20 feet gives a DoF of infinity, but take a 35mm at f/4 at 10 feet gives a DoF of around 4 feet. Drastic difference, right. In addition to having a greater DoF, a wider lens is also more forgiving of handheld footage. I can shoot handheld fairly easily with the Tokina 11-16, but I would never try to shoot handheld with an 85mm lens.
