Best interview prime

I am looking into getting a f1.4 fixed lens and was wondering which focal length would be the best for setting up and shooting single person interviews. Anyone have any suggestions on lenses? I was thinking probably something like the Sigma 30mm 1.4?

If you go with the 50 just make sure you have room. My issue with the 50 especially trying to shoot indoors, unless you have a lot of room, your only going to end up with a close up shot. For an interview i like more of a mid shot (say mid waist up), for the 50 you need at least 4-5 feet for this if not more. Just something to point out, depending on where you plan on doing your interviews.

Personally id go for something wider.

Just personal preference but I like to change framing between questions so I use a zoom. In tighter for the serious stuff, a little wider when establishing the subject. Just to mix it up. Granted, this is for longer form stuff when we'll see a person more than once.

Again - that's just me. I wouldn't want to be locked into one focal length when I've gone through the trouble of tracking down and scheduling someone to share their story.

50mm is nice because it keeps the proportions correct, I feel anything wider elongates facial features making subjects look less attractive. I still use all my nikon lenses on my 7d and love the results! I am using just a cheapo nikon f to eos converter and it works like a charm!

24-70 with a b camera rolling a 50, to mask the transition from wide to cu. Add a bit more drama by cutting in tight to your subject during a particularly interesting/dramatic/whatever moment!

Given I don't currently have a b camera, I'd still say the 24-70, even if it does mean you have to do a horrible creeping zoom - as long as the subject is interesting, it shouldn't be a problem!

That's a great low-light lens but an unlikely interview choice. It's also made for APS-C only and it'll give you 48mm. I agree that the 24-70 will provide many more options. However, if you're going to spend that much and don't see FF in the future, why not get Canon's EF-S 17-50 f/2.8 IS?

Edit: If it must be a prime, the EF 24mm f/1.4 L II is pricey yet astounding.

Haven't had any first-hand experience with the 17-50, but I have seen stuff with it and it looks lovely!

Also yeah, I forgot to add, if it absolutely has to be a prime, I'd go with either the nifty fifty (Canon 50mm f1.8) or my Olympus/Zuiko 28mm f2.8, depending on the amount of room and lighting.

Though I do like the look of shooting interviews on a longer lens, it can lead to disassociating the interviewee from the interview, due to the camera being so far away. This could be advantageous, however, if you have an interviewee not as confident in front of a camera as it allows the interviewer to be the only distraction - they don't have a huge piece of glass right in their eye line!
