Using the DVX100b...

What would be the best format, settings, etc. to export with for a television that's 12 inches by 16 inches? Thanks.

4:3 or 16:9? SD or HD?

It all depends on the aspect ratio and what format you shot (normal, squeeze, letterbox).

If its 16:9, shoot "squeeze" with detail at -4 or -5 and export as 720p file with square pixels.

If 4:3, shoot "normal".

Thats just a very condensed way of wording the information.

First, it's a 4:3 TV. Second, TV sizes are given by the diagonal measurement of the screen... in this case, a 20" TV (based on your given dimensions... my guess is that you measured the outer edge, and this is actually a 19" screen). And since there aren't many HD sets out there that are 4:3, I'm guessing this is an older CRT set?

But the reality is, there's no sense in trying to export specifically for a 19" TV. Your best bet is to shoot, edit, and export for best quality, period. It's not going to matter if it's on a 14" TV or a 36" TV. Since you are shooting with a DVX, you are working with DV. So edit in DV, whether you shoot 4:3, 16:9 letterbox, or 16:9 squeeze.

That said... what's your editing system? And what kind of playback are we talking about? Straight from tape (if so, what format)? DVD? Broadcast/cablecast?
