Best DSLR to shoot video with Nikon AI-S Prime lenses

I'd love to get the GH2, but all this hassle for a hack from Vitaly, just so I can shoot 25fps seems a bit too much.

The process of applying the hack seems long as well, people seem to having problems.

What about the 550D, what's your thoughts on that camera Ian?
I had the 7D which is basically the same image as the 550D. The 7D was a great camera (still is) but "for me" resolution wise during "video" recording (as the title of this thread asks) to get the best out of my lens I chose the Panasonics. For photo...the 550 might suit you ...but for video my choice is the GH-2 (even over the GH-1). The skin tones on the GH-2 is more realistic than the GH-1 and or Canons (IMO). If that is important to you then it's something to consider. With that said...I still like the colors of the Canons. It's like the Canons have their own "image signature" (meaning you know it was shot on a Canon). For me...that's great for stills pictures. But for making films....using a different camera is probably like chosing a different film stock. In the case for shooting movies...the GH-2 is what I (Ian-T) prefers.

As far as the GH-2...it is currently hacked by Vitaly and is going through some tests for the optimal settings...so that will still be a little while longer (just like the GH-1 or any other hacked camera it takes time).

Have been looking further into Andrew Reid's comparisons of the GH2 and 600D. It's immense how the GH2 has sharper and more accurate colours than the 600D.

Applying the hack is very quick if you use one of lpowell's presets.

Really? Can you provide me a link to lpowell's presets? For the GH1 or if he's already done one for the GH2.

Here you go (these are all for GH1 - he hasn't got his GH2 yet):

If you read lpowell's excellent and comprehensive introductions, you'll get the differences between the. For your own peace of mind, I'd start with one of the high reliability patches.

Installation is simple: download PTool, the patch file and the Panasonic firmware (links in the posts) to a folder on a Windows box. Run PTool, load the Panasonic firmware then the patch. Copy to root of SD card. Put in camera, switch on, press Play button, load firmware. Done.

Lots of discussion in the GH13 discussion group and GH cameras. Hope this helps - if not, yell :)

Ah so there are different types of patches, guessing you can't apply them all then (or maybe it's just the 75Mbps Peak Reliability Patch that doesn't work with the others).

Although I don't own the GH1, once I purchase the GH2 - the main thing I want from the hack is to be able to shoot 25fps. If there are similar patches released for the GH2, what one would be your recommendation?

You can only have one patch at a time. You can tweak the patch in PTool - for example, all lpowell's patches include the option for all interface languages. I switch that one off. I *don't* fiddle with the tech stuff because I don't know enough to do so.

I'm using this one (which I forgot to include in my original list) which does nice 25p
