GH5 Best cheap/free HLG to 709 LUT or process?

Assuming this works on the S1 as well. Wanting to shoot in HLG on the S1 (higher bitrate HEVC 10-bit capture internal) but then just transcode to ProRes for editing, and convert it down to Rec 709 space and get the extra DR and better codec while waiting for the vlog update in July.

Are there any good LUTs to download to convert HLG to SDR editing? I did a quick google and saw MysteryBox LUTs, who wanted $250 for a LUT which isn't just ridiculous, it's offensive.

Recommendations?

Tom - I've played around, it is wonderful! It's convoluted for the workflow some of my projects (large, long, sometimes utilizing footage over 7 years, etc.) and it's easier for me to just keep it all in Premiere. For shorter form stuff, I want to take advantage of the round tripping workflow to play more. As well, I always have my eye on them for a potential transition away from Adobe. Curious to see what Resolve 16 brings.

In the meantime, adjustment layers and copy/paste of Lumetri filters with LUTs and conversions is my go to!

You may want to check out the Leeming LUT. The LUT started with Panasonic cameras (HLG, V-Log, and Cine-D), and now has versions for a variety of cameras to align them all to an accurate Rec. 709 base.
 
From a previous post from someone here, this is what I use:
"Yes, HLG is available with 6K anamorphic mode.
In another note, besides Paul's excellent HLG LUT, you can also use HLG natively with Resolve 14 for Rec 709 delivery:
- In Project Settings, under Color Management, Change to Davinci Color Managed
- Under Color Management select:
-- Rec 2020 HLG ARIB STD-B67 for Input Color Space
-- Rec 2020 HLG ARIB STD-B67 for Timeline Color Space
-- Rec 709 HLG ARIB STD-B67 for Output Color Space
In this way I am getting quite similar results - I haven't compared color accuracy, etc, but in general both look georgeous.
Paul's LUT has the advantage that it can be used when the project is not color managed in this way, so you can mix and match footage"

And from another forum:
" You can also use the Colour Space Transform OFX (CST) plugin to access the Resolve colour management profiles listed above, but on a clip-by-clip basis like the LUT. However, the CST doesn't clip the levels like the LUT does, so it's a more flexible option.
I use the CST plugin exclusively because it offers the best of both worlds. "
 
Leeming LUT Pro just upgraded the GH5 to the latest version a few days ago. We've been using it with HLG for 24p / Cine-D for 60p and are getting great results. I highly recommend buying Paul's LUT which comes with free updates to the latest version forever. www.leeminglutpro.com

For HLG and HDR10 I think it is best to use the Rec.2100 definitions.

If you only want to change the gamut you should make sure you either select gamut mapping at the project level or use the Gamut Mapping OFX because the Rec.2020 gamut is much larger than the Rec.709 gamut.

Obviously, if you want to convert the HLG gamma/gamut to Rec.709 you also need to tone map (either automatically or manually) as well.

This is by far the best solution. It is also stupid cheap.
 
That's not the best solution, it is the easiest solution.

The best solution is to convert the gamut and manually color correct with a calibrated monitor.
Manual color correction is always better than any cookie-cutter solution.

1) LUTs are used by virtually all professionals in the industry, and there aren’t any better for the GH5 than the Leeming LUT.

2) Maybe you didn’t read the OP’s original post, but he says he is looking for an inexpensive LUT.

3) Since you know so much, surely you’ve got some GH5 HLG clips to share?

What is it with forums about technical stuff, that people get into fanboyism and don't accept other opinions?
How can anybody know something (or someones LUT) is "the best solution". Why do people get aggressive about somebody criticising a product they bought?
Is it just about justifying your own purchase decision? And the "pros in the industry all use luts" argument mostly comes from people not working as pros in the industry.
I was not that impressed with the "leeming LUTs", that doesn't mean they are bad or don't fit some peoples workflow. But of course a one size fits all LUT cannot be
better than a properly color managed manual grading.

Well, hopefully, I can reduce some of the confusion to you.

A deliverable format has two components, one is gamma and the other one is gamut. Gamma, strictly mathematically speaking is the value of the exponent, which causes a line to curve up or down, but in general, it is used as the overall shape of the luminance curve. Gamut is how color is defined, in simple terms a large gamut can hold more colors than a small gamut.

So here are some definitions:

Rec.709 is both a gamma and a gamut.
Rec.2020 is a gamut, it does not say anything about the gamma, it is a lot larger than Rec.709.
Rec.2100 is a Rec.2020 gamut that uses a PQ (HDR) gamma.
HLG is a standard that can use both a Rec.709 or Rec.2020 gamut with a specific gamma (i.e. hybrid log, which stands for HL).

When you grade in a Rec.2020 gamut and you try to put it into a Rec.709 gamut it's like putting beer from a small glass into a small glass. It may overflow, it depends on how full the large glass really was. In other words, if you use colors that are close to the Rec.2020 limits and you try to convert that to Rec.709 you run into problems. What you need to do in that case is either gamut-map the Rec.2020 to Rec.709, for instance, DaVinci Resolve has such functionality, or manually reduce the colors using the Vectorscope.

Of course, the gamma needs to be mapped as well going from PQ or HLG to Rec.709. Again you can do this manually or use a tone-map function.

Thank you for such a thoughtful reply! I'll get it figured out eventually and this does help. It is easy to forget about gamut vs gamma! So far, I've been having a fair amount of success with VLOG but with HLG, I'm still struggling with it. Thanks again.
