best audio for a nobody?

i second the h4 or h4n, 2 xlr is important. i've been using the h4 for about a year now. having to deal with a bunch of connecters is a pain with the h2. but i do like the dr100 as it has physical level controls rather than menu based but i've yet to use it. i was planning to buy it but i'd rather have a bag based recorder with more channels so i'm waiting on the trascam dr-680.

got my h4n in the mail today. shipping these days is super fast!

i have been tormenting my pug, trying to get all kinds of grunts and stuff out of him. its awesome. it makes me think in terms of sound a lot more.

now i need to figure out a mounting strategy for certain things.

I just finished a project with the H4n and my 7D. I used my azden 200upr wired into the h4n and disabled the mics on the h4n. On one channel of the azden I had the azden 10bt lav and on the other I used the azden wireless 5xt with a rode ntg-2. I had to put a battery in the rode to power it for the azden 5xt. The audio is amazing and the only thing I noticed is a very low freq hum which I believe was the office heating system where we were shooting. I synced it up on my macbook pro with pluraleyes. That program is worth the little investment, get it. We didnt use a clap and it found the audio fine. We ended up having to rerun the process on clips it couldnt sync cause of overlapping or whatever, but the rerun took care of the rest. Just wish pluraleyes did multiclips and put the results in one timeline and not seperate for each clip.

In all I am very happy with this workflow. At first I was going to go with that device that controls the agc in the 7d and gives you 2 xlrs. But I like the idea of an independant recording device vs controlling agc in the 7d. At some point I am guessing we'll have a agc hack and all I would have to do is get a pink noise cable. But then you wont have the headphone out to monitor on the h4n, unless you rigged a Y cable suitable for both.

What I am looking for as far as the h4n is best use or best settings when recording audio. I am trying to get a real quite noise floor if possible or need to find out the best way to process the audio for a more professional sound. I worked with recording audio for musical artists, rappers, etc, but field recording is a little new to me.
