Best 50MM equivalent for $500?

So we're talking 28, 30, or 35 here.

I bought the Canon EF 28mm 1.8 USM and it's fine. I prefer the look of the EF 50mm 1.4 though but they share 58mm filters (FaderND) and barring a EF 14mm 1.8 USM coming to market, remain my only primes.
