Bechdel test for women in film

I think that the whole don't know 'em so I can't write 'em thing is rooted in the fact that you can make up anything you like about Zeta Reticulans without worry of contradiction or insult, but doing that with members of other ethnicities - if you're writing them as people rooted in cultures specific to those ethnicities - can come off very badly indeed if you screw it up.

I'm gonna have to debate that one in the way Sad Max questioned my Ving Rhames Dawn of the Dead one, mainly due to the fact that we don't know if Kurt or Keith was The Thing. So it is debatable if he really lived to the end. Great film though. One of my all time favorites.

actually.... if you look at whose breath is visible and whose isn't, you can tell which one is alive and which one is.... THE THING!!!!!!!!!.

Isn't there an alternate ending shot too where it fades up on a dog running across the tundra?

I don't know...remember when that first guy got absorbed, then ran out into the snow and was kneeling there hissing at everybody, before getting burned? His breath steamed in the cold air. So the visible-breath test may not necessarily be where it's at...

Yes. I've seen it.

Although I'm not entirely sure that was really a dog...

Baton Rouge is far enough from the Gulf Coast that we're unlikely to see any direct effects from the spill.

I heard somewhere that's unintentional. It was just because of how the set happened to be lit that you can only see one of them breathing.

The Thing is awesome...I can't believe they're remaking it and that Ron Moore is involved. :(...Of course it was a remake itself...oh, well.

If the new version improves on the Carpenter film as much as the Carpenter film improved upon the Christian Nyby version, all will be well...

I can say with almost total certainty the new Thing's fx will be CGI and won't be half as creepy as Rob Bottin's creature work.

OMG... just what we need...another 'test'.
You know, there's a reason men usually die before their wives....because they want to!

If that young lady would like to see more chick flicks, it's a free country, she's welcome to write & produce as many as she'd like. I also hear there's a 48 hour "Thelma & Louise" marathon playing on the Lifetime Channel this weekend!

I mean at least Captain America had a black sidekick at one point. He was kind of useless, but he talked tough and hit people when needed. LOL. And to this day Marvel still doesn't do much with the Blade, Powerman or Black Panther characters in the realm of their books. These are the most poorly written characters going.

Falcon got a chance to kick butt in Cap just recently; I agree that his "powers" do suck though. I haven't read Panther in a while but (IMO) Hudlin did justice to the character.

Also in Geoff Johns Avengers "Red Zone" arc, a few years ago, he did the Panther justice as well. I highly recommend it, we see the Panther go mano-a-mano with the Red Skull.

I think Bendis does a good job w/Luke Cage (all right he's married to Jessica Jones) but he doesn't make Luke useless, weak, or a sidekick.

I'm twisting my head here trying to think of a black villian in the Marvel universe. (don't say Man-Ape).

George Romero features strong female and black characters in several of his movies. He's usually pretty good about not flaunting it, too. They're just there.

All their black characters are pretty decent, just underused. Also you know the only black and white comic Marvel ever did aside from their manga line and the old school Conan, was a black superhero comic that featured most of the black heroes. It had the potential to be the black Avengers. You know what Marvel does? They make the comic black and white. This is a true story, research "The Crew". To this day people still want a black avengers team after seeing the line up that Christopher Priest brought.

# Junta - Daniel "Danny" Vincent, freelance intelligence agent and con man.
# Justice - Josiah "Josiah X" Bradley, son of Isaiah Bradley the black Captain America.
# Kasper Cole - Kevin "Kasper" Cole, the White Tiger is heir in waiting to the Black Panther.
# War Machine

So they have a Justice, basically a Black Captain America, who should've taken Capts place when Capt was shot. He's one of the only few people with stable super soldier serum running through his blood I believe (ironically all of people who have stable Super Soldier serum in them are black).

A Black Panther in wait.

An Iron Man (War Machine)

and a secret agent.

If you add Power Man, Monica Rambeau and Night Thrasher that's one hell of a team. Will you ever see it? No, and if you do, it won't be in color. LOL. Could use another chick though.

Oh, let's not forget the gays--

1. Is there even one gay character with a name?
2. Are they something other than the hilarious sidekick to a romantic comedy heroine?
3. Do they give ANYONE a makeover?

I'd like to modify this a bit.

1. Is there even one gay character with a name?
2. Are they something other than the hilarious sidekick to a romantic comedy heroine, or a serial killer?
3. Do they give ANYONE a makeover, or brutally murder them?

In all fairness though, this is a problem that's really easily fixed.

Solution: Make more films with female protagonists.

If a movie has a male protagonist, all female characters with names is by definition a supporting character or less. In order for two supporting characters to have a dialogue in a scene of their own, they'd have to talk about something relevant to the plot or the main character or both. Otherwise, that scene wouldn't serve a purpose, would it?

It's only natural that almost any movie with a male protagonist wouldn't pass this "test".

Without actually checking this in advance, I'm willing to bet five bucks it's just as hard to find a movie about a female protagonist, where two men with names talk to eachother about something other than women.

Wait, are there a lot of gay serial killer movies around?
