Wait, are there a lot of gay serial killer movies around?
No, the prior film was a thoroughly half-assed and lousy adaptation of an original science-fiction novella called "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell, Jr.
I could be wrong about this, but I think it's more likely the reason they made that change is because that was just the type of horror movies that were made at the time. The paranoia of the "monster within" didn't come until the 60's (PSYCHO being probably first there), and the paranoia of the monster being "people around you" didn't come until the 70's (THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE).I enjoy the Hawkes (or Nyby, depending upon who you ask) film too, but it *is* a pretty disappointing adaptation. Doubtless for technical and budgetary reasons they dropped the key element of the story - the paranoia caused by fighting an enemy who can assume the form of any of your friends - and made it into more of a straight monster movie, complete with James Arness lurching about Frankenstein's Monster-style in rubber carrot-from-outer-space makeup...
I don't think this is true, and you'd be surprised at what kinds of movies women like.I also think that men like movies more than women like movies, which would contribute to there being a lot more male Writers / Directors creating movies for men.

That's exactly what Invasion of the Body Snatchers was, made in 1956.The idea of the hidden monster who looks just like us, sneakily biding its time until it can take us all over and make us itself, sounds like a dandy metaphor for 1950s American anti-communist paranoia, to me...

It does, but I think the kind of thinking where monsters could look exactly like people or were people didn't really exist at the time in movie making. The idea of the hidden monster who looks just like us, sneakily biding its time until it can take us all over and make us itself, sounds like a dandy metaphor for 1950s American anti-communist paranoia, to me...
