Batman goes Nutzoid!

At least he compliments the DP and tells him "you're a nice guy". That was a nice touch I thought..... He even says "please" when asking for his wardrobe to be fixed. Come on, guy can't be all that bad........

That was uncomfortable... and a w e s o m e.

When I run sound, if I can look down... even in the shadows... I do it... if I don't have to see the actor's eyes I make every effort not to. I don't want them to even accidentally see me looking at them during a scene... the crew should fade into the shadows as much as possible, or freeze if they can be seen...

But once again... how is it that people can only see one side or the other of this? Yes, people need to respect the actor's method and make a concerted effort to not interfere with the process... and yes, CB is clearly a total DICK... good actor though.

I hope they dont forget to put this on the making of DVD.

That's exactly what I'm thinking. This better be on the special collector's super duper edition when it hits Best Buy.

As for the outburst, I can understand that if you get worked up emotionally while in character then the DP or a gaffer distracts you that you might get pissed. But, this went on for 3.5 minutes. A little long I'd say for this to go on. He got the point across in the first minute and should've just backed off. He would've looked like a disgruntled professional that way, but when it goes on and on he starts to come off purely as an a-hole. Same with the DP if he was indeed egging Bale on. I've been on the receiving end of pissy directors and crew that go on a tirade when they could just calmly tell someone what needs to be done. Even if you are at fault, it is degrading to get put on the spot and screamed at in front of the whole cast and crew.

Since the context of the scene wasn't provided, how do we know he wasn't using the outburst to intimidate the other actors he was doing the scene with? Now that statement sounds like I'm making Bale out to be a really bad guy. What I'm referring to is when an actor will use an outburst to help drive the emotional energy in the scene on the next take.

There is an interesting story about Sean Connery doing this on The Hunt for Red October. The scene just before he addresses his sub crew he chews out some low level camera crew member. They do the take, and in the context of the scene all the actors and extras were really afraid to mess up, which made them look very respectful and in awe of their captain. Not that it is a good thing to do as an actor but it has been done before.

Why did the director let this shi* go on. I don't give a good goddamn who the "star" is...he ain't in charge. I just lost what little respect I had for McGee-Wiz or what ever the poo poo his name is. He needs to grow a pair.

Just think if James Cameron was directing this. I doubt it would go on for more than 20 seconds before he'd have it nipped in the bud.

DP shouldn't be walking around on set during a take. Let alone fiddling with a light. If there is a problem... tell the director after the take.. let the director ask for another take.

Sounds like bale was in the moment.. and dude totally ****ed it up for him.

frustrating indeed.

Not that I approve Bale's ranting, but he does a good job at it. Usually people sound like a broken record when they get crazy mad, but he used some good arguments.

"You want me to f***ing trash your lights, cause your trashing my scene" lol

"I don't need any walking, he needs to stop walking"

I'm a mild tempered guy, and when acting even I've gone off the handle when someone does something incredibly uncalled for, but not more than a brief moment. lol, 3 min + rant is on a bit too long.

man... this truly pisses me off.... and he can get away with this nonsense... blows my mind... blows my mind.

To me this seems like the director was completely disconnected with his set and lead actor. This never, ever should have come to this, and when it did, it was the director's job to step in and take the heat and get control of the situation. The director is the one conduit between the cast and crew, and he needs to find the balance of both controlling both, and leading both. Having listened to the clip 3-4 times now it seems like he did neither. It actually sounds like Bruce Franklin, the AD tried to step in and was told to stay out of it by Bale. Right then and there the director needed to step in.

Someone asked: " Is McG's voice in that recording?" Yes, that's him saying "I didn't see it" and "Umm ...Fair enough....Good Adjustments." He was absolutely there, and from the sound if it completely failed to step up on his own set.

I also echo what others said about how it sounds like this set had numerous problems and this didn't just happen all of a sudden.

Bale was out of line to lose his tempter that badly. But I have to ask you, have you ever tried acting, especially in intimate scenes? It takes way, way more concentration than you realize. If something distracts you it's very easy to lose the moment, and with it you could easily end up looking like a poor actor. Everyone wants to say actors like this are primadonnas, until they get the chance to see them work and what it takes and what they can do, and then they'd give their right arm to work with them.

E-Online interviewed Franklin who is adamantly defending Bale, saying it's been blown way out of proportion:

An associate producer for the forthcoming Terminator Salvation movie has defended Christian Bale's alleged on-set rant, insisting the actor was a "consummate professional" during filming. A man said to be actor Bale can be heard angrily screaming and using profanity at the movie's director of photography, Shane Haribut for distracting him during shooting by walking into his field of vision.

But Franklin, an assistant director and associate producer on the fourth Terminator film, insists the star was only upset for a short period of time before his "moment" passed.

Franklin tells E! Online, "If you are working in a very intense scene and someone takes you out of your groove... It was the most emotional scene in the movie. And for him to get stopped in the middle of it - he is very intensely involved in his character. He didn't walk around like that all day long. It was just a moment and it passed."

And Franklin is adamant the rant has only been released to slander Bale, "This was my second movie with Christian, and it has always been a good experience with him. He is so dedicated to the craft. I think someone is begging to make some noise about this, but I don't think it's fair. The art of acting is not paint by numbers, it's an art form."

Word is also that Bale apologized later. But I don't know if that was at the end of the day when things cooled off, or after the news leaked.

Since it was one of the most emotional scenes then I'd say the DP should've been a little more discreet, like someone said, maybe wait til the take was over and then tell McG about the lighting issue. As long as Bale cooled off and worked out the problem calmly with the DP, I'd say let it rest. Even though he ranted on longer than needed, it's not the end of the world.

Plus, this stuff happens on movie sets. A couple of people might get into an argument, then by the end of the day they're best buds.

I've seen plenty of A list (and Z list) stars lose their **** on big sets.

Bottom line is that its never OK to treat or talk to someone like that. Its worse that studios and producers buy into letting theirs act like the because they are stars and they studios are afraid of losing them.

We make movies, we don't perform brain surgery. There is nothing life threatening in what we do that we need to take things THAT seriously.

If the problem was that big it should have been handled offset out of sight of crew.
