Barely visible pulsing on footage ?

Hey folks,
Got an issue I was wondering if anyone could shed any light on it for me.
Ive had my HMC151E for a few months now, not shot a lot on it but I had noticed that when I was reviewing footage there is a high paced almost pulse to the image, its like a tiny bit of flicker - very hard to explain but if you watch an area of a recording with say a dark colour u can see it pulsing.
I originally thought it might have been down to the lighting used where I was shooting but I shot in a church at the weekend in natural light and the same pulsing/vibrating of light was noticed.
Im shooining in 1080p/50 with the shutter in the off slot (1/50).
Anyone else had this kind of thing happen, is it a design fact or maybe a fault ?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Rikki

Did you shoot near any flourescnet lights? This can cause pulsating footage.
You can try shooting with the shutter on and try a higher shutter or lower shutter speeds.
Another thing could be the refreh rate of your computer monitor/ lcd screen on witch your are viewing the footage. Depending on the screen resolution you should set the appropiate refresh rate
for example 1024*768 should be around 70-72 Hz.
Try connectin the camera directly to a tv /hdtv and look if you still get the pulsating video.
Hope this helps .

Nope, completely natural light, the other time was under incandescent old style AC lights.

I can see the flicker when I step through frame by frame too so not a monitor sync problem either :S

Is this after render? Or have you played back the raw file and seen it there as well?

Hi folks, thanks very much for the replies.

Its with the raw MTS files from the card, with OIS on but it was on a tripod in the church with nothing but natural daylight.

When rendered out to say MP4 its not as noticable at all but thats probably due to the smoothing of the compression. Still appears to be an inherant problem, at least to my eyes (though I am fussy) that I never got with my HV20's footage.

Many thanks :)

OIS=BAD HABIT... I see the image jumping even while handheld, or while using any other type of stabilizer. I don't find it useful at all, in fact it makes images useless with all that jumping!!!

Thanks Cranky, but what I see is really high speed almost light fluttering.

Anyone know how I can take an MTS file and just "cut" a chunk out to upload and show without rerendering?

I agree I don't find the HMC-150 OIS usefull at all.

It actually seems to make my footage worse with it on than off. I wonder if there is a problem with our cameras?

I never really made a habit of using OIS, I tried it on my old XL1S and it always overpaned, on my FX1 it was actually functional (way better than the HMC150)... so i just don't use it. But maybe you're right and is a problem with our cameras!, or maybe a design flaw?

I would like to see the example Rikki is talking about!

i've gotten pulsing like effects when using ATW-auto tracking white balance.

if you have your WB set to ATW, try turning it off or setting WB to one of the presets.

I think the thing with OIS is it helps you to keep a steady still shot. If you start panning etc it will give you problems. I was filming from a stage today and the tripod jumped with each step of the singers etc. Turning ois on resolved this perfectly, but only because I had the camera still, not panning.

Can someone tell me how to cut 5 seconds out of a big AVCHD file so I can post it, I think it will recompress if I try in Vegas :(

TSMuxer

I wouldn't recompress it if you are trying to demonstrate pulsing, because re-encoding changes the I-P ratio, native structure and distribution of bitrate

You can use free hosting sites e.g. mediafire.com, megaupload.com
