If you just got it, it's version 1.34. The only way I know of to back-up the existing firmware that is in the camera, is to enable "rom backup" in the camera. However, I've done this(not to save the ROM), and now my camera is in permanent service mode.
So, to simply answer your question-no, there isn't an easy way to back it up-and you do not want to mess with putting your camera into permanent service mode to save it.

The differences between 1.32 and 1.34, or unknown. You can get version 1.32 from panasonic-so I would just get that copy, and move forward from there with hacking the camera. As far as I know, nobody(including myself)has a copy of firmware 1.34. I didn't put my camera into permanent service mode until after I hacked it. Now, I can't get it out of permanent service mode. Not a big deal, everything works fine-but, it's not something you want on purpose.

Sorry, but this is incorrect information. The ROM Backup option in the Service Menu does not backup the v1.34 firmware found in the most recently manufactured GH1 cameras. There is currently no known way to backup or obtain v1.34 short of physically disassembling the camera. Fortunately, there is no need to do so, since Panasonic provides freely downloadable v1.32 firmware, which is functionally equivalent to v1.34. Once you have properly hacked the camera using PTool with a patched copy of the v1.32 firmware, you may at any time reinstall Panasonic's original v1.32 firmware.

So what exactly does the Rom Backup option in the service menu do??
