backup question

how come when I backup a time line...and then i want to back it up again say in a week, why does my hard drive create a whole new file?
shouldnt it just go over the existing file and just update any new information?
how do i get hdd to to do this

Backing up by doing what?

And what timeline are you referring to on what computer, editing system, and OS?

Are you saving as or what?

i use speededit. not sure what other info is needed...

my hdd is creating a brand new (50GB) file when all I want to do is update an existing file

im not making sense im sure...but this is the only way i can explain it
