B&W Mode | Time Lapse Clouds

OK, here goes, I'll probably get raked over the coals for this one, but WTH, I'll post it anyway.
That which does not kill us makes us stronger, right?

SCENE: A sunny, 80 degree day in Miami. Strong sun. Very strong.
Shot clouds in B&W Mode this afternoon out my balcony.

1fps Interval Rec.

Started in Cine-D, switched to Cine-V.
Was going to edit the Cine-D shots followed by the Cine-V shots, but ended up mixing them up based on the movement of the clouds.

Started with 100%/80% Zebras, then switched to 90%/80% Zebras.

So an organized test became a free for all.

Should have used the WFM more.

Matrix Cine-Like

Canon FD 50mm f1.7 (first time I've shot clouds with no wide angle).

Ungraded- I was curious how the B&W mode looks. Next time, I'll probably shoot color and kill the Sat in post.

It looks better in post than on Vimeo (imagine that!), but tell me what you see- blowouts, banding, noise, whatever.

After watching the Montana video, I remembered a saying we have in Florida "We have clouds for mountains," so figured it'd make a good time lapse. They're much more dramatic in the summer.

And no shooting in gloves, I was wearing shorts! (I guess it's warm Down Under and in NZ too, but I couldn't resist).

Here ya go:

Wow, what a comparison! Not deserved, but thanks! (it's one of my faves too). Just wait til I have two lenses... look out!!!

Real nice.

B&W. Nice call. ( Red filter would have added contrast.)

I wanted music...epic music!

Maybe could have been too fast... Be nice to see the clouds morph and build a little more slowly.

Sometimes a little hot in the highlights. A difficult subject to expose because of the constant changing light dynamic.

Thanks Shooter.
I was wondering if yellow or red filters would work, I guess they would since it's recording in B&W. Definitely needed more contrast.

Agreed on speed- the slow, billowing effect.
1 fps is the slowest Interval rate- two shots were 1 frame/10sec and they were too fast. And the clouds were moving at different speeds depending on the wind.
Something like 2 fps or the 1f/16f of the HPX170 would be ideal.

And you nailed it on the highlights- very tough to expose with the changing sunlight, and that's why I wished I had used the WFM more.

Thanks for your comments.

awesome video. can someone please remind me what score he used? its on the tip of my tongue but i cant remember!

Nice video....but after digging out for the third time this week....I'm wondering if you have a spare room to rent till all this snow is gone!

Question, did you white balance in color mode first, then switch to B&W mode?
I believe they suggest that method in the manual...or Barry's book....or somewhere?

I shot quite a bit using the above method...mostly head shots and it looks really good.
Sorry I can't share any of that footage at the moment.

III. Allegretto grazioso, Leonard Bernstein :)

I saw banding in the sky around 9 seconds. Other than that, most of it looks awesome. Gonna have to do some timelapse clouds with mine now.

Yeah... right after the sliding waterfall shots! ;-)

Hey Zaza- we have rooms for rent- for every day you stay, it costs one week's use of your AF100! Deal?

I haven't seen that WB suggestion. I just checked my cam, it was in preset 5.6K, not sure why, I rarely use preset.

I'd love to see your talking head shots, but I know, if you showed us, you'd have to kill us!!!

But who needs a slider? Just put the camera on a big puck, slide it on the ice like curling!!!

Thanks Rick- I was sure banding would show up somewhere for somebody, but that's not bad... I'll take it!

I just wish there was a slower Interval rate!

Thanks Mike, appreciate it!
It's Beethoven's 7th Symphony, First Movement (Berlin Philharmonic, Von Karajan conducting).

How bizarre that it matched another song using SoundHound on my iPhone. Typically it is VERY VERY accurate but I never tried classical songs before, haha!
