Actually, there are plenty of shots w/o her ass showing, but the one that clearly shows the camera is the one with ass.

I have updated with a more horrifying version staring former teen hearththrob, Corey Haim.

All right, now I know you're just messing with us.
Not at all, why do you think a lot of indy folks want those adapters to get that coveted "film look".
Well, that theory would work if you were an effects artist. Have you seen most peoples simple composites in AE of gunfights and explosions? If you call that Hollywood quality I would walk away and laugh.
Yes but if you have $500,000 you wouldn't hire "most people". You'd hire an effects artist.
A 35mm adapter doesn't equal best film ever. Hollywood productions have hundreds of extras. Many locations, props, stunts, effects, actors, food, people, crew and more...that a 500,000 dollar film could never even hope to touch.
No but would you agree that a adapter adds to the look of the film? And props and locations can be had for cheap, hire stuntmen for actors and food has nothing to do with the look of the film. Props can be had for cheap. Metal airsoft guns run from $50 to $100 a pop.
Fact of the matter is you can never get a 40,000,000 look for 500,000 dollars. Best of luck if you think that. Take a look at the credits on Hollywood films. Think you can pay that many people with 500,000?
Here's a solution, don't hire that many people. People believe I shot my last film for a large sum of money based solely on the amount of names involved. That's not true.
An adapter is about 30th on my list of necessary pieces of equipment.

And...I fond it endlessly amusing that IF an adapter is so necessary, why aren't they using one on Cr2nk with their prosumer cameras?
At no point did I say an adapter was needed. But it adds to the look and I think we all know that much.

If anyone wants to give me $500,000 I sure I could make something snazzy. The belief Hollywood production values are unnattainable is not true. For lower budgets it takes more time and organization. And I've never seen a film that was called great simply because of the locations, props, stunts, effects, actors, food or people. All this stuff works together. I mean are you really telling me in a place like DVXUser with so many talented people, no one believes they could remake a "big Hollywood film" like, I don't know - Scream? I mean come on.
The only thing holding anyone back is themselves.

You got the right idea.

You guys are PERVS! I never even noticed her ass before you pointed it out.
LOL! Now that is a joke and worthy of a smilie. :)

Because they bought into the hype that adapters will make their videos look like films. Adapters just give you the means to include way too many unmotivated focus racks.

There are far many more important things than DOF to make your video look like a FILM.

That doesnt mean it's not a good tool, that just means it's about 30th down my list of tools. (Whereas most people in the forums talk about having to have an adapter the day after they buy a camera.)

Unmotivated rack focus? Hush yo' mouth! That doesn't exist!

True but people have wanted DOF for a long time and now they have it. I have an adapter for my HV20 and I do like the image.

Absolute first thing I bought after the camera! (But then again we had everything else we wanted).

Preach on brother Gage, preach on.
I've gotten so tired of preaching that, I started to think I was the crazy one

Johnny and Gage, I hear you totally.

If you watch most film, they don't have 1mm critical focus points. That is exactly what you see on most student and other films. Very critical focus. Which eventually points to amateur just planning to blur the background so they don't have to deal with it.

True but people have wanted DOF for a long time and now they have it.

That actually makes no sense. Every camera ever created has DoF (whether it's shallow or deep, controlable or not). If there was no DoF you wouldnt be able to see. DoF is a parameter. It's kind of like saying I want a car that get's miles per gallon, or a lightbulb that has watts.
Of course I know you mean "shallow" DoF but that is different from saying I want DoF, which contextually is more likely to mean that you actually want deeper focus.

Really? Action films many times have a scene where some guy points a gun, the gun is in focus. He comes into focus he says some tough guy bull, cocks the gun he goes out of focus and the gun goes back in focus. Also why would blurring the background mean someone wouldn't have to deal with it? It's not like it's some kind of Criss Angel illusion. The background is still there and has to be dealt with. I'm sure a good DP would understand creative focusing and it's use.

Well thank you for that break down, but I'm sure EVERYONE knew I meant shallow DOF. All I'm saying is the tools are here and now Hollywood is working with the same gear we are. They may have more money but a lot of money goes into paying million dollar "talent" and having a bunch of people running around. Can you not make a good story with about five to ten people in a few locations and add a few video and sound pros to the mix? All that's needed is a great writer and director to pull it together.

I bet Robert Rodriguez could take $500,000 and couple of HDV 24p cameras and make a hit. As much as I respect him (as he's one of my inspirations) what makes him better than you guys? Is he smarter? Better looking? What? Do you really believe that money over talent is the way to go? No one believes a few dedicated people could make a quality Hollywood style film? Someone give me $500,000 and watch me do it simply because I know it can be done. I guess I don't have the self-doubt some of you have nor believe the programming that says someone is more talented because Hollywood (an elite few) says they're special.

Don't think anyone ever said a 35mm adapter was needed. I've shot two features without it but I see no reason not to have one if you can get it. But yes it does give video more of a more filmic look. I don't think I'm wrong here.

You don't know they're not using one, you simply know they aren't in the shots you saw. I plan to use my adapter for about 10% of the shots, mainly for exteriors and creative focusing, not for the whole flick.

Spike Lee shot "Bamboozeld" in 2000 w/prosumer DV gear. Steven Soderbergh shot "Full Frontal" on an XL-1 in '02. David Lynch used a PD-150 for "Inland Empire." "28 Days Later" and "November" were also feature films that used prosumer DV cameras. Oh, and so did "Open Water." What's the big deal w/Crank 2 being shot on prosumer HDV cameras you can nab at Best Buy? I can buy a regulation NFL football but that doesn't mean I'm ready to compete for a spot in the NFL.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If an adapter makes video look more like film, then NOT having an adapter will... NOT look like film! Or...look LESS like film.

The whole thing is ridiculous. If you are shooting with a DVX and need a shot with EXTREMELY SHALLOW DOF, then you will need an adapter for the shot. Exactly the same as you will need a DOLLY for a DOLLY shot, a CRANE for a CRANE shot, a STEADICAM for a STEADICAM shot, etc. An adapter is just a tool for a limited number of shots. But there is this perpetuated myth that somehow a sh*tty video will magically look like a real film if you shoot with an adapter and super shallow DOF. There is some bizarre myth that all film are shot with super shallow DOF. This just isnt so. You know how many people in THIS forum think that if you shoot ONE shot with an adapter that the ENTIRE FILM has to be shot with an adapter?

I'm not saying it's not a useful tool. I think I said a couple times that it IS. But it's about 30 down on my list. So unimportant in making a good, "filmlike" film, but, very useful for the couple shots that need it. And if you dont have one, you can always use a bare DVX (or whatever other camera) and cheat it. Be creative.

As for RR, I'm not so sure he can do what you say. He doesnt seem to be able to spend MILLIONS and make a hit, I dont think he's doing it for less than a million. Have you seen any of his films lately? (And Mariachi was an overrated turd.)

Bamboozle is a really great example of what proper lighting and set design can do. I saw it for the first time in 2005 and if someone had told me that it was shot on film, I would have no trouble believing them. Then later I found out that it was shot on a bunch of VX1000 and I was extremely impressed.

I guess it is when you put it that way. But if you were to say having an adapter makes video look more like film, then NOT having an adapter will make video look LESS like film then you will be correct.

versus the myth that somehow a sh*tty video will magically look like a real film if you shoot in 24p? I think most of us understand various "film looks" are based on various things including camera movement, lighting, etc.

No Mariachi was a fun and exciting action film that myself and many others have enjoyed. And I have no doubt if he shot Mariachi on film for $7000 he could do much more for $500,000. And if the studio doesn't reveal the price and no one is told, it could probably go to theaters and make a ton of money. Let him pick the crew, let him shoot and direct it and I bet it's hot. And Mariachi may not be an Oscar winner but come on, 90% of Hollywood films aren't. If "Epic Movie" got into theaters I'm sure a $500,000 RR film could and I bet he could talk Banderas, Danny Trejo and Cheech into taking a cut from the back end since he likes to use them so much.

Yes that was definitely a hot flick. As a matter of fact I still think everyone should see that film. That movie came out around the UPN era didn't it?

None of my comments are directed at you. They are general observations.

Still disagree about RR.

RR could definitely do this if he wanted to. So the question is why hasn't he put another movie in the can for $7k? Grindhouse had nearly a 70 million dollar production budget for two films that were throwbacks to movies that had zero budget. Sounds like a perfect time to go completely low rent, no budget, guerilla style but they didn't. Why not? RR didn't shoot Mariachi for $7k because he wanted to, he did it because that's all the money he had (and we'll just keep ignoring all the money spent by the studio for post).

...(and we'll just keep ignoring all the money spent by the studio for post)

I think this is a moot point. I think the significance of the "$7000 El Mariachi" was that he got where he is because of a $7000 film. That is irrefutable. If the money for post is brought in, I think the only point there is that I cant believe the money spent actually made it any more watchable. If it WAS worth the money spent, as in it made a big difference, then Mariachi started out an even bigger turd than I already believe it to be.

I agree with you, but I'm just making the point if big Hollywood film are using the same things many of us are using, the only thing that separates many of us from them is the money and the names. Many people here are pros and could maybe make better films than Hollywood. And as far as I'm concerned El Mariachi is still one of my favorite action films and it only cost $7000 (minus post LOL). But even post can be done on many of our desktop computers. Wasn't "Apple Color" supposed to make color correction more simplistic? And didn't Star Wars use After Effects. Can't every Star Wars fan with a computer and a video camera make a lightsaber?

I think we talking about the same thing ultimately, just in different language. For me personally, I don't care that Crank 2 is using off the shelf HDV cameras or that Spike Lee used a VX1000. RED is busting down the doors of the camera business model set up by the likes of Arri and Sony, but I don't foresee a flood of high quality work coming from that and changing the face of the industry forever. It's not what gear you have to use it's what you do w/the gear you have.

What's impressive to me about RR and El Mariachi isn't the fact that he shot a film for $7k and got it picked up by a studio for finishing and distribution. A big part of that is luck. Nothing against RR, but that's the truth. A big part of being successful in this business is luck, period. Being in the right place at the right time and/or knowing the right people. It's chance. What's impressive to me is the hustle, determination, personal sacrifice, and creativity RR used to get that film in the can. I'm sure lots of people told him it was a pipe dream but he went ahead and took the big risk anyway.

How many people on this board are willing to risk everything for just a chance to be successful?

How many people on this board have nice TVs, video game consoles, impressive DVD collections, and iPhones yet still lament about not having enough money to put towards filmmaking?

How many people on this board aspire to be successful writers, producers, directors, editors, sound guys, etc., but don't have the intestinal fortitude to put forth the blood, sweat, and tears required to get a shot at the big time?

Wasn't "Apple Color" supposed to make color correction more simplistic? And didn't Star Wars use After Effects. Can't every Star Wars fan with a computer and a video camera make a lightsaber?
Color is supposed to make CC affordable, not simplistic and how many Star Wars fans w/a computer and a video camera can make an original work of theirs as iconic as the films they are mimicking?

EDIT: over at ProLost is an appropriate blog entry for this thread, IMO.
