C300: B-camera for C300 mkiii

Just wondering what everyone is using as their b-camera to their C300 MKiii or C500MKii? C70 is an obvious choice but i'd rather something lighter in dslr form to run on a gimbal. I currently have an S1H which is a solid camera with a great image but am thinking of trading it in for an R5 which would be a better match for my C300 and provide amazing AF. For longer form content recording to a ninja eliminates the overheating issue with the R5 and for b-roll stuff on a gimbal where you're not recording constantly I cant see it being an issue although it would probably provide some anxiety wondering if its going to turn off. Is anyone else running the R5 as a b-cam?

Im thinking about a Canon B cam too.

Of course Im wondering about some out of the box things..
C100mk2? C300mk1 C200b
M50ii RP

Im big on wanting ND and also considering that the A cam is S35 so a 24-105 doesnt sing on the Acam but an 18-80 does.

I was thinking to keep my S1 but sold it an have now two R5. I am shooting stills also and the R5s replaced the S1 and two S1R. I was pretty happy with the Panasonic colors but the Canon is at least on par and it matches easy with the C300iii. The AF on a gimbal is priceless.

I shot this two weeks ago with the R5. All hand held.
3 GoPro scenes but the end is from the R5 :)

Mabe evaluate your specs.. professional vs sexy

professional has..
nd
good connectors
a way of seeing in the
battery you can change without a rebuild (think DLSR on gimbal - battery can mean remove rebalance)
no external recorders and possible data loss

sexy has
high frame rate
is low mass
deep external recorded codec

I dont see a recorder anywhere but in a studio or webcast setup - certainly never on a gimbal

for a bcam maybe sexy beats professional. Or maybe you need professional always*.

Hell there are even some super cheap C500mk1 out there.

*I often need 'professional' as Im working for a director who will want a monitor. Solo shooters can get away with different things. Im not making a vlue judgement of pro vs solo.

In my limited experience of using both canon mirrorless and the C 70 on the new Ronin RS, the mirrorless cameras are easier to work with because of the better in body image stabilization options and the auto focus that you can use as a touchscreen and it also has eye tracking. The C 70 works just fine on the same gimbal, btw.

However as soon as you take the camera off the gimbal into any other environment I would not hesitate a second to use the C70 as a proper B camera but would never use a canon mirrorlss as a B camera on a two camera shoot

AKA, you really need 3 cams. A, B, and C. C being the mirrorless of course. That's a lot more cost, but does cover a lot of situations and allows for speed during production days with the mirrorless permanently on the gimbal if the other two cameras are occupied, or the option of having the C70 on the gimbal when not needed for 2 cam interviews for benefit of the built in ND.

All food for thought. Thanks all. I think I'm going to get the R5 and sell my S1H. I'll then pickup a C90 when that makes an appearance. On a side note, I have used the R5 with a ninja V in 4k and had unlimited recording and no overheating issues so cant see it being an issue to use as a b-cam.

you don't need a Ninja for that. 4K standard doesn't overheat neither. It's not that bad or soft like the Youtube guys want to make you believe. The only issue is that recoding in HQ or HFR is not possible in a cool down time. In seven months I never had a single issue because of overheating. (YMMV if you shoot 8K RAW all the time)

If matching colors is a concern, you might want to check out our new camera matching software CineMatch - it makes matching colors between different brands (e.g. Panasonic, Canon, Sony, Blackmagic, RED, Arri and more) easy, and might allow you to squeeze some more use out of your S1H for the near future until you're ready to upgrade.

Disclaimer: I work for FilmConvert, which makes CineMatch :)

Then hurry up with the FCP version. :)

CineMatch doesn’t bring reliable AF to the S1H btw.

I’ve bought CineMatch, but I’m waiting for it to support the C300Mk3 AND the R5. Seems like these cameras probably should have come before some of the oddballs on your support list... but maybe there’s something there I’m not getting. CineMatch supports the Sony RX0, a couple of RX100 models, the Panasonic DVX200... even the C70... but no support for the R5 or C300 Mark III. Puzzling.

Any word on support for these cams?

We're working on the FCP version now, have to rewrite the plugin for FxPlug4 framework, but that portion of the job is nearly done. Keep an eye out for an announcement in the near future :)

Canon R5 and R6 profiles will be in the next update, coming very soon. We're working on ramping up our camera pack support, the older models in the list were cameras we already supported in FilmConvert and we could leverage the data to use in CineMatch, but we need to accelerate our pace for the newer cameras on the market

John thanks for your input. I’m using cinematch and can confirm it works almost magically when cameras are supported.

I’m using it to convert Pocket 6k footage > C200 because that’s the closest match available for my C300mk3.

It’s a tad painful because a) I’m a FCP user and need to do the conversion in Resolve, then export files and import to FCP, and b) the C300mkiii has been out quite a while now and it’s not supported - so it means tweaking things again as the look comes close but not quite right.

I do love the product, just needs FCP & C300mk3 support, then I’d highly recommend it. Soooo much faster and more accurate than trying to manually match cameras (and I’m reasonably experienced at grading).

Yeah. I’m a little puzzled why the C70 got support sooner than the C300 Mark III and R5/R6 that have been out a LOT longer.

For those interested, I did end up trading my S1H in for an R5. After filming on the R5 on a few shoots now, I can say it was 100% the right decision. Having colours that match my C300 out the can just saves so much time in post and the AF combined with a gimbal has enabled me to get shots I could simply not do with the S1H. The overheating was the issue I was concerned about but I've not had any issues. For longer form interview content I put it out the Ninja-V and it runs for hours and for b-roll i've shot internally in the 4k HQ mode and at 4k 120fps with no issues for a couple of hours staring and stopping as you do. With the addition of C-log3 and cinema raw light coming to the R5 soon, I feel it was a great investment.

That's my experience too. Since I have the C300iii R5 I have let so many people walk towards the camera like never before. Because it's that easy if you just have to take care for framing and not framing and focus pulling as a solo shooter. Same on the gimbal.
